Failing steel culverts on U.S. 2 replaced with rubberized plastic

Crews have finished replacing five failing culverts under U.S. 2 highway.

Traffic was diverted for six weekends so crews could cut into the highway to remove and replace culverts. The new culverts are up to 300 feet long and buried up to 30 feet beneath the road.

The contractor is Granite Construction.

The 40-year-old steel culverts carry runoff from the roadway to nearby drainage systems. WSDOT said they were corroded and needed to be replaced. The new pipes are thick, rubberized plastic. They will help prevent further damage to the roadway, and reduce emergency closures.

Crews will now begin building a new overpass at Bickford Avenue. They have removed a section of the hillside north of US 2 and are building a retaining wall for the overpass and on-ramp. Girders for the new overpass will be placed in November.

Information about the $22.4 million project is at www.wsdot.wa.gov under projects, US2.
