SEATTLE — Seattle Opera will premiere “The Wedding Banquet” in January 2027 at McCaw Hall.
The new comic opera by Huang Ruo, with a libretto by James Schamus, is inspired by Ang Lee's 1993 film and its 2025 reimagining by director Andrew Ahn. The production is a co-commission with The Metropolitan Opera. The work is the first by an Asian American composer to appear on Seattle Opera's mainstage. After its Seattle debut, it will move to the Met in New York. James Robinson, Seattle Opera's general and artistic director, will direct. The story follows four friends who stage a marriage of convenience to navigate personal and immigration pressures, exploring queer love, cultural identity and chosen family through humor and heart. The creative team includes Allen Moyer (sets), Donald Holder (lighting), Sunny Hitt (choreography), Han Feng (costumes) and Greg Emetaz (projections). The Edgar Foster Daniels Foundation is lead sponsor.
