Alaska Whalefest celebrates marine wildlife

SITKA, Alaska -- In early November Sitka, Alaska is the place to be for whale-watching enthusiasts and those interested in learning about marine mammals. Nov. 3 – 5, the fourth annual Sitka WhaleFest will offer a unique opportunity to hear the latest from an international lineup of marine mammal researchers and biologists, as well as see local marine wildlife in nearby Sitka Sound.

During the festival, whale-watching opportunities abound, with numerous tour operators offering sightseeing trips. Whale Park, one of several area land parks, also offers a scenic vantage point from which to view whales in nearby waters.

In conjunction with the educational seminars and whale watching activities, additional festival events may include folk singers; a sea chantey concert; a trade market featuring high quality hand crafts, fine art and other Alaska-made products; a 10-K fun run; hiking, kayaking and historic tours – just to name a few!

Because the humpback whales are not mating or calving, but rather building up reserves prior to their midwinter migration to tropical waters, whale watching during November is an ecologically appropriate activity in Sitka Sound. Other marine mammals often spotted in the area include killer whales, harbor seals, Stellar sea lions and sea otters. Sea bird viewing is also at its peak during the winter in Sitka Sound where murlettes, bald eagles, great blue herons and other species are abundant.
