Sand building festival: artistry, engineering and sometimes a backhoe

OCEAN SHORES, Grays Harbor County — Most sand sculptures at the beach don't require a backhoe a gas-fired compacting machine or a bucket brigade just to create a foundation to begin the enterprise.

But Bert Adams wasn't just building sand castles — he creates sand art, and it usually involves an elaborate, labor-intensive process.
