Webster B. Anderson, a longtime Seattle steamship agent, ship broker and customs broker, has received the 1995 Puget Sound Maritime Achievement Award, sponsored by the Seattle Maritime Week Committee and The Marine Directory. Anderson, 86, still works in the family business, B.R. Anderson & Company, and its sister company for ship chartering, Pacific Steamship Corporation. Founded as a custom house brokerage in 1898 by Anderson's father, the company has since expanded to include steamship agency services, tug and barge agency services, ship brokerage and chartering. At the outbreak of World War II, Anderson left the family business and began working with a naval architect in New York. In 1942, he became a production manager at the Todd Pacific Shipyards facility in Tacoma, overseeing 25,000 people involved in the construction of navy ships. Anderson returned to the family business after the war, and became president of the B.R. Anderson & Co. in 1956. He also played a key role in establishing the VIRGINIA V Foundation in mid-1970s, having crewed the now historic vessel in 1925.
