AGC

Kris Beason has been named director of the newly formed Associated General Contractors of Washington Safety & Loss Control Services Department, previously known as the Safety and Group Retro Departments. The AGC has also hired Don Robertson as full-time safety coordinator. His primary job will be to conduct Safety Team and WorkSafe Washington job site visits. Robertson holds a degree in loss control management from Central Washington University. Brad Swanson has also joined the AGC as a summer intern. He will be assisting with job site visits, as well as other safety programs. Swanson currently attends Central Washington University.

Construction Associates

Ben Shearer has joined Construction Associates Inc. of Lynnwood as special projects division manager. He has over nine years experience in commercial construction, in both project management and estimating. Shearer also holds an associate degree in business administration from Shoreline Community College.

ADSC

Michael B. Murphy, managing director of DBM/CM Contractors Inc. of Federal Way, was recently elected president of the West Coast Chapter of ADSC: The International Association of Foundation Drilling. Also, Alan MacNab of Tukwila-based Kultin-Condon & Assoc. was named secretary. The ADSC is a nonprofit international trade association headquartered in Dallas.

R.W. Beck

R.W. Beck's environmental services staff in Seattle has a new director -- Ron Topazio. He is a professional engineer with nearly 30 years of experience in marketing and managing major environmental and engineering projects. Topazio has worked on large projects in the past involving hazardous and solid wastes with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bonneville Power Administration, and others.

Comp claims workshop

Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. is holding a June 28 workshop and dinner on workers' compensation claims at the Bellevue Athletic Club. The working dinner will include simple, real-life tips for controlling claims costs, red flags for problem claims, employer rights, how to avoid unnecessary claims, how to screen "bad risks" before hiring them, effective post-accident procedures, and actual footage from a private investigator uncovering fraudulent claims. The program will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Cost is $30 for ABC members and RETRO participants are free. Registration deadline is June 22. Herring/Newman

Seattle-based marketing and advertising agency Herring/Newman has hired Louise Guryan as its director of media services. Guryan most recently headed-up Foote Cone & Belding's integrated marketing services. She also supervised the agency's technology group media department. Prior to that, she was media director for FC&B Direct/San Francisco.

Cole & Weber

Ron Hawkins has joined the Seattle office of advertising agency Cole & Weber to take over the creative department. Hawkins comes from Ogilvy & Mather in Chicago where he held the post of group creative director. He has also worked as creative director for Leo Burnett and the Chicago office of Hal Riney & Partners. Adweek has named Hawkins the best TV writer in the Midwest and Communication Arts has featured his work on several occasions.

Pacific Northwest Bank

Six-year-old Pacific Northwest Bank has announced it will be opening a Snohomish County Financial Center in late July. The bank has purchased and is currently refurbishing the former U.S. Bank branch at 64th and 196th street S.W. in Lynnwood. The new branch will provide the same style and range of banking services as its Seattle and Bellevue counterparts, and will be managed by long-time banker Joseph J. Rees.

Metropolitan King County Council

The Metropolitan County Council's Utilities and Natural Resources Committee this month will hold four workshops/public hearings on the 1995 Executive Proposed King County Park, Recreation, and Open Space Plan. The proposed plan is designed to enhance the county's role as a regional provider of parks and recreational facilities by preserving open space corridors, while working with cities to develop plans for transfer of ownership of the 112 parks and 14 pools that are located within city limits. Local suburban city mayors and council members have been invited to participate in these meetings. The workshops and public hearings are scheduled as follows: today in Bothell's Ricketts Building; June 21, Kent Senior Center; June 22, Bellevue City Hall; and June 29, Burien City Hall.

State Commission on Hispanic Affairs

OLYMPIA (AP) -- Gov. Mike Lowry has appointed an Oregon official, Roberto Reyes-Colon, as director of the state Commission on Hispanic Affairs. Reyes-Colon, a native of Puerto Rico, has been program coordinator for Oregon's Immigration Coordinating Committee since 1989. Before that, he worked for U.S. Rep. Les AuCoin, D-Ore., and for the Portland Human Relations Commission. Reyes-Colon was the favored nominee of the 11-member commission. He succeeds three-year director Jerry Martinez, who was a finalist for reappointment. The job pays $48,075 a year.
