Len-Can Builders Inc. of Seattle has been awarded the 1995 Region X Prime Contractor of the Year award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Len-Can was selected from competing firms from the states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The company was nominated by McChord Air Force Base, through the commendation of Brig. Gen. Richard C. Marr. Len-Can was founded by Leonard Simpson in 1984 and is a member of SBA's Minority Enterprise Development 8(a) Program. SBA's program offers guidance with management, technical assistance, marketing, financing, and government contracting.
Kyle Fry has joined Auburn-based Poe Construction as project manager. Fry is a recent graduate of Washington State University, with degrees in construction management and business. He was also the recipient of an AGC scholarship, spending the last three summers as an intern at Poe.
Art Anderson Associates of Bremerton recently had two construction quality management term contracts renewed by the federal General Services Administration's Region 10 in Auburn. Region 10 --which manages GSA projects in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska -- has contracted with Art Anderson for the past eight years. Bob Brott continues to serve as Anderson's contract manager to GSA. Two Anderson employees, Vern Schager and Doug Koenen, were recently recognized by Region 10 for their partnering efforts with the government.
The National Association of Women in Construction has announced the winners of its first annual Crystal Vision Award. The award was designed to recognize an individual who promotes the role of women in construction through initiatives, policies or legislation. The winner for 1995 is Ted C. Kennedy, founder and chairman of BE&K Inc. of Birmingham, Ala. He created a model on-site child-care program, known as BE&Kare, which recognizes the important need of working mothers to provide care for young children. NAWIC's awards committee also selected Maybelle Hartness, plasterer journeywoman and instructor with the Plasterers and Cement Masons Job Corps Training Program in Chadron, Neb., for a special Crystal Achievement Award. Hartness was singled out for her achievements to recruit and train young people to the trades. Both Kennedy and Hartness will be honored for their achievements during closing ceremonies of the President's Banquet at the 40th Annual NAWIC Convention Sept. 9 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Denver.
Winners of the ninth annual Remodeling Excellence Awards were named recently by the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties. The winners were: Prestige Custom Builders Inc. of Seattle in the Open Category and the Merit Award; J.M. Bogan Company Inc. of Monroe for Room Addition; J.L. Jordan Company of Redmond for Major Remodel; Shirey Contracting Inc. of Bellevue for Kitchen Remodel; and Tenhulzen Remodeling Inc. of Redmond for Bathroom Remodel. A total of 22 projects were entered in this year's competition. They were nominated by builders, architects, interior designers and others in the housing industry. Judging was based on uniqueness and quality of construction.
Bellevue Community College is offering training and state certification in flagging, traffic control and safety. Instruction consists of classroom training and a lab session in a parking lot. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a picture ID card with certification valid for three years. A fee of $35 includes textbook and all materials. Two sessions are offered: Item R9996 on July 12, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and July 15, from 8 a.m. to noon; and Item R9997 on Aug. 16, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Aug. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon. The July 18 Associated General Contractors of Washington's Tax &Fiscal Affairs Luncheon meeting will feature Grant McDonald of Parker, Smith and Feek Inc. His topic will be Employee Benefits from Cradle to Grave -- Daycare to Life Insurance. McDonald will cover a broad range of topics, from cafeteria plans to the future of health care costs/regulations. He will also discuss which employee benefits are taxable to employees. The program will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Second Floor Board Room of the AGC Building (1200 Westlake Ave. N., Seattle). The Construction Specifications Institute is holding its Eighth Annual CSI Golf Field Day July 13 at Mount Si Golf Course in Snoqualmie. Tee off is at 1 p.m. Golf will be followed by a prime rib dinner and an awards presentation. Cost of golf and dinner is $55. Golf only is $38 and dinner only is $17. Helina Bojarski, managing director of Bojarski & Associates, has been named president-elect of the World Trade Club, a non-profit association for international trade professionals founded in 1946. Other officers elected for the 1995-96 year are: Paul Calderon of ABN AMRO Bank, vice president; Gary Ishaam, First Interstate Bank, treasurer; and Cindy Firmani, Alliance Strategies, executive director. The National Kitchen and Bath Association has recognized Fay Liner of Redmond's Showplace Kitchen and Baths with an honorable mention in its 1995 design contest. She will also have her work featured in the Fall 1995 issue of Woman's Day Kitchen and Bath Planner.
Minneapolis-headquartered regional brokerage and investment firm Dain Bosworth has promoted Bill Green to manager of Nasdaq trading, Mark Louiselle to manager of the block trading desk in Minneapolis, and Evan Olsen to manager of the Seattle Nasdaq trading desk. Green, managing director, has been head of the firm's Seattle equity trading desk. Louiselle, vice president, had been a trader on the block trading desk. Olsen, also a vice president, had been a trader reporting under Green. The three have more than 30 years of combined experience.
Brooks Sports, a Bothell-headquartered international distributor of athletic footwear, apparel and accessories, has named Bruce Pettet as vice president of sales and marketing, USA. Pettet comes to Brooks from California-based Performance Sales West, where he was principal/partner the past eight years. Under his guidance, Performance Sales West was sales agency of the year for Brooks for the last five years.
