Washington State Legislature

SEATTLE (AP) -- State Rep. Pat Thibaudeau is now a state senator, being sworn in to fill the unexpired term of the late Cal Anderson. Thibaudeau, a 43rd District Democrat from Seattle, was appointed to the position Monday by the Metropolitan King County Council and was sworn in Tuesday by state Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge. She became the likely successor to Anderson's senate post after she won the Sept. 19 primary. There were no Republican opponents. Anderson, the state's only openly gay legislator, died in August of AIDS-related complications.

United Development Corp.

Yasuo Miyazawa has been named president of United Development Corp., formed in 1973 by the Tokyu family of companies of Japan to develop the master planned community Mill Creek near Seattle. He will manage the day-to-day operations of its residential development activities as well as the Mill Creek Country Club. Miyazawa comes to United Development and Mill Creek with an extensive background in real estate, development, management, finance and marketing. He has been employed by Tokyu and its subsidiaries for more than 24 years, including management positions with subsidiaries that operate Mauna Lani Resort on Hawaii, Pan Pacific Hotels and Tokyu's hotel and resort operations in North America. Located on 1,073 acres, Mill Creek is now an incorporated city, home to 10,500 people.

Washington State Labor Council

The executive board of the Washington State Labor Council has voted to support a state-financed solution for construction of a new baseball stadium in King County. The group said it wants to ensure continued economic vitality and that the jobs generated by a healthy sports-entertainment industry will continue to thrive. Any special session of the legislature should be limited to the stadium and should not involve other political issues and agendas, the council added. The King County Labor Council had supported the proposition on the King County ballot, but at that time, the state Labor Council did not have a position on the issue.

Public Relations Society of America

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) will hold its annual national conference in Seattle, at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, on Oct. 28 through Nov. 1. Among numerous workshops, seminars and special events for public relations practitioners, highlights of this year's conference include keynote speakers Cokie Roberts, ABC News (Oct. 29); Nicholas Negroponte, MIT Media Lab and senior columnist for Wired magazine (Oct. 30); and Alvin Toffler, author of Future Shock and the Third Wave (Oct. 31). Accounting Partners

Bellevue-based Accounting Partners, a staffing firm specializing in the placement of temporary and permanent accounting and finance professionals, has opened a new office in Menlo Park, Calif. Operated by husband and wife team Ted and Stephanie Macauley, Accounting Partners has grown into a $2.5 million business with three offices and 15 employees since its foundation in January 1994.

Washington Public Power Supply System

The Washington Public Power Supply System's executive board has elected Don Carter, deputy city manager for utilities and physical services for the city of Richland, as its new chairman. Three other officers were also appointed to serve one-year terms on the 11-member executive board which serves as the policy-making body for the Supply System. Carter has served as executive board secretary since joining the board in June 1994, and is also a member of the Supply System's board of directors. He has more than 20 years experience in the public utility industry, including the last seven years as Richland's Energy Services director. Los Angeles-area consultant Louis H. Winnard was named executive board vice chairman. Winnard, who was elected to the executive board in July, also served on the board from 1982-88. He is a former general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Elected board secretary was Edward E. Coates, an independent customer services consultant and former director of utilities with Tacoma Public Utilities. And, Vera Claussen, a Grant County Public Utility District Commissioner and president-elect of the American Public Power Association, was reelected as assistant secretary of the board. Claussen has been a member of the executive board since 1986, and also serves on the Supply System board of directors.

WA State Convention & Trade Center

Larry Stevens, an employee with the Washington State Convention & Trade Center for seven years, has been nominated as an outstanding convention service manager by the readers of national journal Successful Meetings. Using a ballot in the publication's June issue, readers specifically named those convention service managers who have done an outstanding job of servicing and managing events. Winners will be selected and featured in a special supplement in the February 1996 issue.

SDL Corp.

SDL Corp. has announced the appointment of Mike Krueger as executive vice president and the promotions of Britton Slone as senior vice president of sales and marketing and Chuck Clegern as senior vice president of special projects. Krueger has been in the construction industry for 19 years. His role as head of SDL's operations will include overseeing estimating and cost database refinement, document drawing coordination, constructability review analysis, project scheduling, field staffing requirements and project closeout. Slone has 17 years experience in the industry and is responsible for development and implementation of the sales and marketing plan, including coordination of SDL's construction services for its clients and new business development. He also oversees the implementation of public relations and marketing communications functions as well as strategic planning. Clegern has 20 years experience in the industry. His role is to monitor and control all interior construction, building renovations and small commercial buildings under $5 million.
