Xerox of the Pacific Northwest

Seattle-headquartered Xerox of the Pacific Northwest, encompassing customer sales and services operations for Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Northern Idaho, has hired Elizabeth Bangasser as marketing manager and named Jim Everist as manager of sales operations. Previously, Bangasser held senior-level sales and marketing management positions at Kenworth Truck Company in Kirkland. Everist has been with Xerox for 22 years and has served as an account manager, sales manager, region training specialist, and employee development manager.

Pesticide Registration Commission

Gov. Mike Lowry has announced a number of appointments to the Pesticide Registration Commission, a commission created by the 1995 legislature which will study, investigate, and evaluate the registration of pesticides for use in Washington on minor crops and for minor uses. The 11 members of the newly formed Pesticide Registration Commission are: Bob Berger who currently is a landscape architecture consultant. Berger served as a landscape architect for the state Department of Transportation for nearly 30 years, working as principal designer on major landscaping projects along I-5 and I-90. Dan W. Elmore who has farmed in the Columbia Basin for 25 years and owns Pacific Produce Inc., a potato fresh-pack business. Elmore is a board member of the Washington State Potato Commission. Paul F. Figueroa, a senior research forester for Weyerhaeuser Company, based in the Centralia Forestry Research Center and also a member of both the Western Society of Weed Sciences and the Western Aquatic Plant Management societies. Ann E. George, administrator for the Washington Hop Commission and the Hop Growers of Washington. George also serves as administrator of the U.S. Hop Industry Plant Protection Committee. Warren Henninger, a 17-year employee of Nestle Brands, Potato Division, and a member of the National Potato Council. Doug Muse, an asparagus grower in Pasco and a member of the Asparagus Commission since 1993. Michael S. Robinson who is a part-time orchardist with 15 acres and a horticulturist since 1981. Bryan Sakuma who has served on the Red Raspberry Commission board of directors for six years, two of those as president. Sakuma also is a member of the Strawberry Commission, the Blueberry Commission and the Northwest Agricultural Research Foundation. Del Vanderhoff who currently serves as general manager for Chamberlin Distributing Co. Geralyn M. West, a sales specialist for Bayer Corp. in Spokane who has worked with farm advisors and growers, making recommendations on chemical and cultural controls of weeds, insects, and diseases. And, Tedd Wildman, a self-employed private consultant with Independent Pest Management Consulting, performing general horticultural consulting services on hops, tree fruits and grapes. Wildman has served as vice president of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers.

The Seattle Times

For the fifth consecutive year, The Seattle Times Company is included in Working Mother magazine's annual list of "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers." The top 100 companies receive recognition based on the following criteria: pay, opportunities for women to advance; support for child care; and family-friendly benefits such as job-protected leave for childbirth, flextime, part-time work, job sharing and telecommuting. The list measures both family-friendly benefits, including child care, and success in promoting women. Working Mother announced the top 100 September 11 in New York. The Seattle Times was one of the firms asked to provide a panelist and Laura Boyd, benefits manager, represented the company.

Association of Washington Business

The Association of Washington Business has announced its First Annual Better Workplace Award and will recognize five association members. A panel of experts will judge companies on: child care and health care programs, worker safety issues, compensation programs, job training opportunities, benefits to workers, and other criteria. Western Washington University

Gov. Mike Lowry has announced the appointment of David Kelly to the board of trustees of Western Washington University. Cole, 33, is the general manager for the Windows '95 team at Microsoft. He replaces Craig Cole, whose second six-year term as trustee expired on Sept. 30. Four regional universities are served by seven-member boards of trustees who establish policies for the university. The appointment must be confirmed by the state Senate.

R.A. Kevane & Associates

Seattle-headquartered career consulting firm R.A. Kevane & Associates has opened a new office in Bellevue, at the Corporate Business Center in the Bellefield Office Park, 11201 S.E. Eighth Street. The Bellevue branch represents the first of several new offices scheduled to open within the next year. The 20-year-old company's Portland office opens November 1995, and a fourth office will open January 1996 in Phoenix. Company founder and C.E.O. R.A. Kevane is author of "Employment Power: Take Control of Your Career," and presents seminars to major employment groups including various Bar Associations and Chambers of Commerce. Over the past 20 years, he has published more than 170 articles in numerous papers and journals, including the Seattle and Portland Daily Journal of Commerce.

Pacific Corridor Enterprise Council

The Pacific Corridor Enterprise Council (PACE) will lead a 48-hour blitz of Calgary, Alberta, on Oct. 15-17, to focus cross-border free traders of the Pacific Northwest on the fastest growing Canadian city, now just 75 minutes from Seattle by jet. PACE chairman Warren Wheeler, principle in Receptagen, an Edmonds biotech firm listed on two Canadian stock changes and a partner in a Burnaby, B.C., wholesale distribution company, is spearheading the two-day trade mission, which is being co-sponsored by Seattle-based Horizon Air and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. More than 20 PACE members will participate and non-members are welcome. The trade mission will be repeated in reverse next spring when members of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce visit Seattle and Puget Sound area businesses.

American Marketing Association

Lynn Beck, marketing director for the SuperMall of the Great Northwest, will discuss the strategy of launching the area's newest shopping attraction at an October 11 luncheon meeting of American Marketing Association's Puget Sound chapter. She will discuss the integrated marketing communications blitz that attracted 500,000 shoppers during the SuperMall's first three days, and plans for making it the area's top tourist destination. SDL Corp.

SDL Corp. has announced Heidi Sweeney has been promoted from project engineering to business development. Her new responsibilities focus on new business development opportunities for the company's Special Projects team and providing client service to existing customers. Sweeney holds a degree in construction management from the University of Washington.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Maj. Gen. Russell L. Fuhrman of Lake Oswego, Ore., has been named division engineer and commander of the North Pacific Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, headquartered in Portland. Fuhrman will direct all Corps activities in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, including a $325 million civil works project budget, a $100 million environmental cleanup budget, and a $275 million military construction program at Army and Air Force installations. Prior to his new assignment, he served as deputy chief of staff, engineer, at U.S. Army Europe headquarters. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a master's degree in chemical engineering.

Deeny

Deeny Construction Company of Seattle has announced the addition of John O'Brien as an estimator. O'Brien interned at Deeny last summer and graduated at the top of his class at the University of Washington's Department of Building Construction. He previously worked for nine years on the Barrow utilities project in Alaska.

AGC

John Jewett is the new manager of the Central Washington District of the Associated General Contractors of Washington. Jewett has spent the last 17 years with an investor owned utility company as collections department manager and as coordinator for the customer service, billing and accounting department.

ASHRAE

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc. now has an Internet site. ASHRAE says typing the Internet address http://www.ashrae.org will access the organization's latest news on HVAC and refrigeration technology and standards. The main menu offers topics from in-depth technical information to an electronic version of ASHRAE Journal. The home page will be updated often to provide additional information and future software and hardware enhancements planned by ASHRAE.

Job profits program

The Associated General Contractors of Washington Education Foundation is sponsoring The Job Profits Program: Understanding Field Profits Oct. 19 at the AGC Building (Education Center, 1200 Westlake Ave. N., Seattle). The program is specifically designed for foremen and superintendents. The objective is to teach field managers why profits are important, how lean profits are in construction and what specific steps the field manager can take to improve them. Equipment safety class

AGC Safety & Loss Control Services is offering an Oct. 18 class on construction equipment safety. Remodeling seminar

Historic Seattle Preservation & Development Authority is sponsoring a series of three workshops on Monday evenings -- Oct. 16, 23 and 30 -- at the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N.) in the Wallingford neighborhood. Preserving Your Old House will be conducted by Rick Sever, an architectural historian and general contractor specializing in restoration and remodeling. The series has been established to provide hands-on information for people interested in maintaining older homes and will focus on homes 25 years and older. The first session will feature exterior issues, including how to survey a home's exterior and how to recognize common destructive pests. The second session will focus on interior problems, with a special emphasis on paint. The final session covers environmental hazards, including earthquake preparedness.
