Managed Care Washington

Seattle-based Managed Care Washington, a statewide managed behavioralhealth care company, has named Cheryl Jacobson as new director of an employee assistance program (EAP), offering employees and employers a way to deal with work-related problems through a statewide network of behavioral health care services. Jacobson joins the company with 15 years of experience in behavioral health services. She was most recently with Human Affairs International as supervisor of outpatient clinical services. Prior experiences includes serving as program manager and supervisor in the Homebuilders Division of Behavioral Sciences Institute and as case manager and program director with Childhaven, a therapeutic child care program in Seattle.

The Melby-Cameron Company

The Edmonds-based Melby-Cameron Company, an association management firm, has added two members to its staff. Robin L. Barry has been hired as an account executive. She has eight years of association management experience gained by serving as an account executive for two other association management firms located in North Carolina. Graphic Designer Dawn Endean has been brought in to head the newly created publications department. Her professional background includes working as a freelance designer and serving as a graphics coordinator for Shoreline Community College.

Paper Scissors & Stone Inc.

Designers Scott Cameron and Lisa Ewing have formed a new corporation, Paper Scissors & Stone Inc., a studio located at the base of Queen Anne Hill, in Seattle, and focusing on retail concepts, office interiors, graphics and product design. Cameron was a founding partner of Buffalo Design Inc. where he worked for eight years. Last year, Cameron left interior design to concentrate on the development of BuffaloStuff, a wholesale company with products for the home and garden which have sold in retail stores around the country. Ewing was with Buffalo Design for four years before taking a sabbatical in Spain. Since returning she has worked with Starbuck's retail planning group and as a freelance consultant.

GLY Construction

Lori Schauer was recently promoted to marketing manager at GLY Construction in Bellevue. Her responsibilities include public relations, client events and marketing systems. GLY has also announced Rick Shanti has joined as LAN administrator. His responsibilities include network and computer support/maintenance, evaluating costs and benefits of a wide area network, computer training, and development and enhancement of MIS systems.

Construction law

The Associated General Contractors of Washington Education Foundation is offering a class on construction law at two locations, Seattle (AGC Building, 1200 Westlake Ave. N., second floor) and Tacoma (AGC Building, 3820 S. Pine, downstairs meeting room). Class participants will learn some of the basic principles of contract law and become aware of the meaning and importance of some key construction law clauses. Students will be exposed to negotiating skills through case studies. The course is designed for field personnel needing an awareness of construction law and contracts. The class is offered in Seattle on Monday and Wednesday evenings (6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) from Nov. 6 to Dec. 6. The same schedule applies in Tacoma. Cost is $195 per person. AACE meeting

The Seattle Section of AACE International is holding a Nov. 8 dinner meeting at the AGC Building in Seattle. The program features a presentation on document imaging. Speakers include Harry Thetford, senior project manager with Northwest Cascade, and Craig Goodwin, president of EZ Image Inc. The presentation will include a panel discussion and demonstration by Northwest Cascade using EZ Image's software. The evening will kick off with a reception at 6 p.m. in the Marina Room of Kayak Lakefront Grill, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Cost is $19 per person. CSI seminar

The Construction Specifications Institute is holding a Nov. 9 seminar entitled Navigating Through Blueprints and Specifications. The seminar will explain bid documents, Master Format, and other documents. It will bring together the purpose, organization and use of construction documents. Speakers will include Ann Whitacre, CCS specifications consultant; Al Thurman, construction documents consultant; and Dave Jackson, construction administration and specifications consultant. Richard Hein, specifications consultant, will be the moderator. The seminar will run from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Meany Hotel in Seattle. Cost is $20. Students get in for $5. Also, a $5 discount will be given to members who have a reservation for CSI's dinner meeting (scheduled immediately after the seminar). The cost of dinner is $20. Advanced management program

The AGC of America is offering a 10-day advanced management program in Dallas. The program is designed to provide senior construction executives with an intensive learning experience involving the management skills and knowledge needed to operate a successful construction company in a competitive environment. Admission requirements include 10 years of construction experience with an appropriate baccalaureate degree. To qualify, applicants must have some responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the company. Classes are taught by experienced industry experts and contractors with ample time for questions and answers. Class size is limited to 38 participants in order to encourage interaction among peers and faculty. Tuition is $4,250, which includes accommodations, scheduled meals, books, instructional materials, and use of the exercise facilities at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, the site of the meeting. Women Construction Owners and Executives is hosting a Nov. 8 meeting at Franco's Hidden Harbor restaurant in Seattle featuring Judith Stouder of Stoel Rives Boley Jones & Grey. Construction Safety Council

The Seattle Vicinity Construction Safety Council is meeting tonight at Ivar's Salmon House (401 N.E. Northlake Way, Seattle). The topic of this month's meeting is crane safety, spotlighting the newly formed Washington Crane Safety Association. The association, through a partnership with labor and management, is developing voluntary guidelines in crane operator competency, attached manbasket standards and communication procedures. The association will also address the feasibility of using proximity sensors, hardhat communication systems and video cameras for special job site applications.
