Seattle's Hornall Anderson Design Works (HADW) has received London International Advertising Awards' highest commendation in the category of non-alcoholic beverages packaging for its Talking Rain sparkling ice cans packaging, one of HADW's five finalist entries. The awards competition annually honors the world's most creative television/cinema commercials, radio commercials, print advertising and package design. Additional HADW finalist entries included the Starbucks Coffee Company 1994 annual report, Frank Russell Company LifePoints brochure, Corbis direct mail piece and GE Capital Assurance promotional kit.
Hurley, Atkins & Stewart Inc., an independent insurance company with offices in Seattle and Everett, recently expanded its operations to include an employee benefits department. The new department will offer a variety of employee insurance options to large and small companies, as well as individuals. Founded in 1952, Hurley, Atkins & Stewart specializes in surety bonds and insurance coverage for contractors, and is also one of the largest writers of professional liability coverage for architects, engineers, accountants and attorneys in the Pacific Northwest.
Safeco Corp. has announced the creation of a select markets division, effective January 1. The new division will incorporate Safeco's former select markets department, and the corporation's subsidiaries, F.B. Beattie & Co. and Whitehall Insurance Brokers. The new select markets division is expected to underwrite and manage more than $150 million of premiums in professional liability, medical malpractice, surplus lines and specialty admitted business. S. Vance Hickin of Safeco Corp. will serve as division vice president. F.B. Beattie will continue to operate as a surplus line broker and managing general agent in Seattle, Santa Ana, Calif., Chicago and Atlanta, and the Santa Ana-based Whitehall will continue operating through its five regional offices.
Seattle-based small-ship cruise operator Alaska Sightseeing/Cruise West has chosen Borders, Perrin and Norrander as its advertising agency. The Seattle-based company will work primarily on print advertising, including consumer and trade magazine, and newspaper. Local design firm Williams & Helde will continue to assist the cruise line with production of brochures and other collateral material.
The Seattle Indian Center may be forced to cancel its annual childrens' gift distribution due to a sharp decline in holiday donations. Seattle Indian Center executive Camille Monzon said at least $16,000 must be raised between now and mid-December to keep the Christmas gift program afloat. The center distributed gifts to 2,869 needy children over a six-day period in 1994. This year, the agency is looking to the business community for help. William Bradford, dean of the University of Washington School of Business Administration, has been elected to the board of directors of The Commerce Bancorporation. In addition to serving as dean, Bradford also holds the position of professor of finance. He is knwon around the country for his work on capital formulation for minority enterprises, having done considerable research and authored many publications related to financial institutions and minority business. Bradford also serves as a director of the Pacific Coast Banking School and on the advisory board of the Pacific Rim Bankers Program.
Bellevue-based Accounting Partners, a provider of temporary and permanent accounting and finance staff, recently opened its third office, in Menlo Park, Calif. The firm was founded less than two years ago and is owned by Ted and Stephanie Macauley.
Washington State University has received a $250,000 gift from Chateau Ste. Michelle's winery that is expected to strengthen viticulture research at the university and further enhance the quality of Washington wines. The gift will endow a distinguished professorship at WSU-Prosser. Longtime viticulture researcher Robert Wample will be appointed to the professorship. Wample joined the WSU faculty in 1976 and transferred his research program to Prosser in 1986. He was lead author of a paper that was recognized as the best viticulture article published in The American Journal of Ecology and Viticulture for 1993. The article reported results by a team of WSU scientists who, in collaboration with Chateau Ste. Michelle at their Cold Creek Vineyard, showed that growers don't need to apply as much nitrogen fertilizer as had become the industry standard.
Mark Mugleston, a member of the Norman Company's property services group, was awarded the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation by the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. Of the estimated 80,000 commercial real estate practitioner nationwide, only 3,600 currently hold the CCIM designation. Mugleston is the director of leasing at Columbia Seafirst Center. The Norman Company, a Seattle-based commercial real estate firm, handles the property management and leasing of the building.
Matthew Peterson has been named purchasing manager of the residential division for the Quadrant Corporation. Peterson has 14 years experience in the homebuilding field. In his new position, Peterson is responsible for the acquisition of construction services and materials. Hannah Coan has been named corporate communications manager for the Quadrant Corporation. Coan brings over five years of marketing experience in wood products and government. In her new position, Coan will oversee marketing communications and public outreach for Quadrant.
John A. Wright has been named to the Investment Properties Divison of Grubb & Ellis' Seattle commercial real estate office. He has been engaged in real estate as an attorney and in brokerage since 1980. Wright received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from Stephen F. Austin University.
The University Book Store will open its new professional and technical bookstore in downtown Seattle on Nov. 29. The store will be located on the corner of 4th Avenue and University Street in the building formerly occupied by United Airlines. The new store will offer selections in business, finance, law, engineering, science, computers, architecture, construction and medicine. The store plans a grand opening celebration the week of Dec. 4.
Free workshops are being offered by the Mountlake Terrace branch of Continental Mortgage Company on the FHA 203k rehab and remodel loan. This loan allows for repairs or improvements to an existing home and lets borrowers roll the cost of the work done into a low-interest home mortgage. Tech-fast has moved its headquarters facilities to: 711 St Helens, Suite 200, Tacoma, WA 98402. In addition to moving the offices, Tech-fast has added Harry Miller project manager; Sherry Music production assistant; Everett Kvamme and Maurice Samra estimator/detailer; Phillip Berg, drawing coordinator; and Emily Carrick, customer service representative. Tech-fast, with offices in Tacoma and Sacramento, is currently building over 120 self-storage projects per year in western states. It has recently begun epanding into the south and midwest.

The Commercial & Investment Brokers Association (CIBA) has developed software for the most popular legal forms used in commercial and investment real estate transactions. Known as CIBA's Legal Library, the Windows-based product enables completion of forms using a personal computer. The initial release contains 17 forms, including various purchase and sale agreements, listing agreements and lease agreements, and seven lease riders. Katie Kulczyk, CIBA's executive director, said the association plans to expand the range of forms available in its legal library, and also plans to release periodic updates. Prices for the legal library start at $39 for a single agent office.
Victoria Mortgage Corp. has recently opened a new regional office in Bellevue. The office will house both wholesale and retail mortgage lending centers. Jim Palm, vice president/regional manager, comes to VMC with over 20 years of mortgage lending in Washington. He was formerly with Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corp. Leslie Silver, Bellevue's wholesale lending manager, also comes to VMC from Chase. Silver has over 17 years experience in the industry.
Windermere Real Estate announces the addition of five sales associates. Building Services' Judy Ness has practiced real estate for more than 10 years with Coldwell Banker and most recently, Resource Marketing. David Henderson also joins building services after working with Resource Marketing. He has 10 years of real estate experience. Steven Lockwood, of the Lakeview office, has been with Windermere since 1991, and has six years of experience in real estate. Lee Mackey Callahan joins Windermere Northwest from Hallmark Realty Corporation where she has worked for six years. Joining Yarrow Bay is Paul Lund, who has three years of real estate experience with John L. Scott and Kamas Real Estate.
