MIDCOM Communications Inc., a provider of voice and data telecommunications, announced that Ken Hughes has joined the firm as vice president of information services. Hughes will oversee data processing and information systems for the expanding Seattle-based company.
Portland-based Nor'Wester Brewery & Public House announced the release of its newest product, Honey Weizen. The product was developed by Christian Skovborg, Nor'Wester's brewer in charge of new products. Honey Weizen is made from Nor'Wester's Hefe Weizen. The light German style wheat ale is fermented with Clover Honey to impart a crisp honey finish.
On January 18, the Wing Luke Asian Museum will open two new exhibits: "Out of Focus: Media Stereotypes of Asian Pacific Americans" and "Asian New Year Traditions." "Out of Focus," the first exhibit in the Northwest tracing the development of Asian Pacific American images in popular culture, will explore how negative and inaccurate media images developed over time and examine their impact on Asian Pacific Americans today. Major sponsors for the exhibit are Ruth Mott Fund and Key Bank of Washington. Additional supporters are Seafirst Bank, the Hugh & Jane Ferguson Foundation, Nintendo and Ellen Ferguson. "Asian New Year Traditions" an annual display at the museum, will help usher in the new year by featuring artifacts connected with Asian traditions. The Year of the Rat will be celebrated February 19.

Cal Mayer has been named project manager for Lease Crutcher Lewis of Portland. Mayer previously served as project manager for Fletcher Wright Construction in Portland and Seattle for the past 15 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Oregon.
The Northwest Construction Consumer Council has elected its 1996 officers. They include: Phyllis Kramer, ARCO Products Company of Blaine, council chair; Chris Steinbrecher, Portland Development Commission, vice chair; Michael Mequet, Port of Seattle, secretary; Gary E. Ervin, PacifiCorp. of Portland, treasurer; Jim Lowe, Weyerhaeuser Company of Longview, immediate past chair; John Meyer, E.J. Bartells of Renton, affiliate director, construction; and Erik Bodholt, R.W. Beck of Seattle, affiliate director, design. Members will meet monthly in three locations: Seattle, Portland and Bellingham. The organization is a regional forum for executives to explore cost-effective construction techniques.
Charles Strazzara has joined Meng as principal and director of commercial and retail design services. He has been principal of Strazzara Partners since 1993, providing design services for Merrill Lynch, Seafirst Bank and other law and investment firms. Strazzara has also provided ongoing tenant improvement design services for property management companies such as Colliers, Trammell Crow and The Norman Company. Retail clients have included Pacific Bagel and numerous mall tenants.
Mark J. Johnson has been appointed to the King County Arts Commission for a partial three-year term through December 1997. Johnson has practiced architecture in Seattle since 1983 and is an associate in the firm of Bassetti Architects. To the Arts Commission Johnson brings experience in the design and evaluation of cultural and educational facilities. He has taught design studio at the University of Washington's College of Architecture and Urban Planning and also taught design concepts to primary and secondary school teachers. Johnson also served on the Seattle Design Review Board as a representative of the design professions. He chaired AIA Seattle's 1995 Honor Awards program in October and helped to found the Center for Architecture and Education, an interdisciplinary institute at the University of Washington.
David D. Driver of the Zervas Group Architects, Bellingham, has been granted a license to practice architecture in Arizona, where he received his bachelors degree in architecture from the University of Arizona. Driver was the project manager for the Cascade Natural Gas remodel and maintenance shop addition in Bellingham and is currently working on the multi-purpose room remodel for the Concrete School District and an interior office remodel for People's State Bank.
Marty Lyon of Marty A. Lyon Landscape Architects in Tacoma is president-elect of the Washington State Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. In October he will become president of the state organization. His office is now involved in landscape design for a large warehouse development for Simpson Tacoma Land Company.
BOORA Architects of Portland has announced the addition of six new employees to the staff. Colette Adams joins the administrative staff as bookkeeper and benefit administrator. Katy deVille is a new interior designer at BOORA. Her projects include the Arlington Club, Davis Wright Tremaine expansion, Chehalem Valley Middle School in Newberg, a Portland Community College addition and NikeTown New York. Jason Giles, a recent graduate of Oklahoma State University, is working as a design assistant on the new 74,000-square-foot Oregon Veteran's Home project in The Dalles and an addition to Marriott Hotel at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Architect Brenda Katz, who is registered in California, is currently working on NikeTown San Francisco and renovations to Rene Middle School in Newberg. Jill Lenseigne is an interior design assistant on several projects, including a Tualatin Hills park and recreation office expansion, Pacific University, U.S. Courthouse, Kaiser Rockwood Clinic and a new senior center in Newberg. Matthew Spicer joins BOORA as the project architect for a master plan of a retirement community at Marylhurst. He is a registered architect in the State of Massachusetts.
Scott Rose has joined JGA Architects of Portland as construction administrator. His experience includes acting as an owner's representative for public projects and he recently worked as construction administrator for the Eugene School District. At JGA, Rose is handling construction administration for the new Skyline Middle School in Camas, Wash. JGA Architects is the Portland office of John Graham Associates. Both are members of the nationwide DLR Group.
