The Business of Publishing

Norman Bolotin, president of Laing Communications Inc., a Redmond-based publishing services company, has been named as one of three directors for the Business of Publishing, a new graduate publishing course which is part of the University of Chicago publishing program. Bolotin was affiliated for six years with the Radcliffe Publishing Course.

Continental Savings Bank

Seattle-headquartered Continental Savings Bank has added Juel Erickson as vice president of information systems, and J. Craige Naylor as vice president of residential loan production. Erickson comes from the Puget Sound Blood Center where she was manager of information systems. Naylor previously worked as vice president and area production manager for First Interstate Bank of Washington.

Brie & Bordeaux

Brie & Bordeaux, a cheese and wine merchant, will open a retail store and cafe on April 1 offering bistro-style cuisine in the Green Lake neighborhood, at Kirkwood and 56th street. Collaborating with owner Alison Leber will be chef Scott Samuel who has worked for Gerard's Relais de Lyon Restaurant, and chef Susan Carlisle who was an alumna of Un, Deux, Trois.

Longview Fibre Company

Longview Fibre Co. has promoted Jerry M. Landau to marketing manager. For the past 18 years, Landau has been a paper-sales representative in the Pacific Northwest. He started his career with the company in 1965 as a technical engineer at the Longview pulp and paper mill.

Greenwood Heating & Air Conditioning

Greenwood Heating & Air Conditioning, which has occupied the same street corner in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood for over 75 years, plans to relocate most of its personnel to a newly opened Kirkland facility due to an increase in business. The company says it will retain a small sales office at the 74th and Greenwood Avenue location.

Starbucks & Westin

Westin Hotels & Resorts and Starbucks Coffee Co. have announced an agreement which makes the specialty coffee manufacturer the exclusive coffee supplier for Westin's 35 owned and managed properties in the United States and Canada. The agreement will be fully implemented by March 31.

KPFF

KPFF Consulting Engineers has promoted David Arndt, Dan Fenton and Craig Olson to associate status. Arndt joined KPFF in 1985 as a structural engineer with emphasis in educational, performing arts, museums and office structures. He has managed such projects as the Fleet Support Headquarters in Everett and currently is project manager for the University of Washington Medical Center, East Wing Addition. Fenton joined the structural engineering group of KPFF in 1985 with a background in retail, hospitality and commercial structures. Recently he completed the structural design for the SuperMall of the Great Northwest in Auburn and is presently working on Redmond Town Center, a 1.1-million-square-foot regional shopping and office complex. Olson, also a structural engineer, specializes in multi-use buildings, commercial and port facilities and seismic rehabilitation. After joining KPFF in 1993 he worked on NikeTown and Redmond Town Center. He is currently at work on the new Edmonds Meadowdale High School. Don Oates has joined KPFF with nine years of civil engineering experience primarily in transportation designs for port facilities. At KPFF he is working on preliminary designs for the Port of Seattle's's Terminal 18 Expansion. His previous work experience includes the Lockheed Site Development Analysis for the Port of Seattle and the South Terminal Expansion for the Port of Everett. Jim Aronsohn has joined the firm as a structural engineer specializing in bridges and civil structures, and has design experience at Sea-Tac, Denver International and Portland Airports in addition to road projects. He is now working on designs for the First Avenue South Bridge.

AHBL

AHBL Inc. of Tacoma has added two principals to the firm. Engineer Sean M. Comfort specializes in municipal, school district and private utility development project management. He is now principal-in-charge of Cascade School Junior and Senior High Schools, the Franklin Pierce Transit Center, Pierce County Fire Station, Columbia Bank-Spanaway, Graham Town Center, and Hidden Village Planned Development. Engineer Paul McCormick specializes in coordinating project teams for industrial projects. He is currently providing structural engineering services and project coordination for the Redding Assisted Living Facility, the Flex-A-Lite Plastic Manufacturing Facility, the Narrows Airport, Wauna Fire Station, Commencement Bay Corrugated Manufacturing Facility, and the Hillhaven Assisted Living Facility in Memphis, Tenn. AHBL has also promoted three engineering project managers to the position of associate. Doreen Gavin is a senior project manager responsible for planning, designing and managing civil engineering projects, including site planning, engineering studies, river and flood plain hydraulics, urban hydrology and hydropower development. She has served as civil engineer for the Tumwater, Sedro-Woolley, Tacoma, Olympia and Bainbridge Island School Districts as well as the University of Puget Sound. Tim Holderman is a civil engineering project manager whose project experience includes site development, grading, storm drainage, roads and utilities. He has managed projects for several ports and assisted living facilities. Thomas Hicks has five years of structural design experience involving seismic analyses and upgrades to existing, unreinforced masonry buildings. He specializes in the study and retrofit of historic buildings including the University of Washington Guggenheim and Johnson Halls, Sedro-Woolley Elementary School and the Good Samaritan Hospital. He is now providing structural engineering for the Washington State Patrol Headquarters, the Aviation Trades Building, the Oak Harbor Transit Facility, Port Townsend High School, the Emeritus Prototypical Assisted Living Facility, Columbia Bank-South Hill and the Tyler Street Housing Development.

PTL

Kurt W. Groesch has joined Pacific Testing Laboratories (PTL) as director of construction services. Groesch has over 20 years of experience as a civil engineer providing design, geotechnical study and special inspection services. He will assume supervision of PTL's construction services division, overseeing more than eight project managers and 35 registered inspectors in four Pacific Northwest offices. He will also provide technical guidance to PTL's geotechnical engineering group and serve as an expert witness for geotechnical and construction-related litigation. Prior to joining PTL, Groesch was vice president of Northwest Regional Operations at AGRA Earth and Environmental.

HDR

Mark G. Quandee has joined the Seattle office of HDR Engineering, Inc. as a railroad engineer, having had 12 years of experience in railroad engineering and public works stormwater management. He was previously employed by Southern Pacific Transportation Company, San Francisco, as a civil engineer.

SyThesis

David Dierks has joined SynThesis of Bellevue as a project architect. His experience in warehouse and commercial design is a good match for SynThesis' current project list which includes a number of high-profile projects at Van Doren's Landing in Kent. Dierks has been employed as an architect for more than 20 years, serving as project manager of several warehouse and distribution facilities, hospitals and postal facilities. Dierks most recently was with CNA Architecture Group of Kirkland.

ABKJ

Karen J. Williams has joined Andersen Bjornstad Kane Jacobs, Inc. (ABKJ) as project engineer. She has 12 years of bridge design experience and is currently working on the I-5 196th Street Southwest/State Route 524 Interchange in Lynnwood. She was previously with Exeltech. Melissa L. Lewis has joined ABKJ as marketing coordinator. She was most recently with Add and Accent, where she was sales and marketing director. She also was program and public affairs director for KTVF-TV in Fairbanks. ABKJ has named Sherry Perkins Leigh director of marketing. Leigh has been with ABKJ's marketing department for seven years.

GeoEngineers

Lynda A. Reite has been promoted to marketing coordinator at GeoEngineers' Redmond office. She has been with the firm since 1993, and is responsible for proposal production.
