Brian F. Elert has been hired by Northwest Cable Advertising as a sales representative in the company's Regional Department. He will work with companies seeking to advertise on cable systems throughout the nation. In addition, Noel Kurtz is a new program sales representative for TV Mart, an NCA-managed shopping and information network on Viacom Channel 23. Kurtz previously worked selling segments in the independently produced "Front Page Seattle,"a program on TV Mart featuring local businesses.
Bradley Wheeler and Steve West have joined Piper Jafray as investment executives at the company's Seattle and Bellevue offices, respectively. Prior to joining Piper Jaffray, Wheeler was an international sales executive with United Parcel Service in Seattle. He holds a bachelor of science degree in aviation business administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. West, who holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Washington State University, previously worked at First Federated Communications in Seattle as a sales and marketing manager.
Beth R. Reynosa has been named Port of Vancouver's Property Administrator. Reynosa reports to Patricia B. Stryker, Port Director of Property and Development. Reynosa works closely with Stryker and the environmental affairs/capital projects manager to promote utilization of Port facilities. Her responsibilities include capital project coordination, tenant relations and property development and maintenance permitting.
Karen Johnson has been hired by Linda Sellers Communications as an account executive. Johnson will work with agency clients in a variety of industries, including health care, high tech, real estate development, manufacturing and professional services.
As part of its 1996 Civic Awards luncheon ceremony held at the Seattle Sheraton, the Municipal League of King County honored Bellevue attorney and former city council member Terry Lukens with the James R. Ellis Regional Leadership Award. In addition to his work on the Bellevue City Council, Lukens is a shareholder at the law firm of Karr Tuttle Campbell, where he has practiced real estate, business and corporate law since 1974. Lukens has been active in local government since 1984, including membership in the Bellevue Planning Commission, council member for the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle, president and board member of the Suburban Cities Association and a two-year term as mayor of Bellevue. He also belongs to the Bellevue Rotary.
Saint Martin's College has hired Dick Clarke as director of construction and plant operations. Clarke will be responsible for heading the college's $6.5 million renovation project. The project encompasses renovation of Old Main, the college's primary classroom and administration building, remodeling of the former Student Union Building for use as an interim library building and reroofing of the maintenance building. The project is expected to be completed about 1997 and was formerly under the direction of Jack Thompson. Thompson was recently appointed executive vice president of the college, a newly created administrative post that will oversee most day-to-day operations at the college. Clarke comes to Saint Martin's with extensive experience. As Kent School District's director of maintenance and operations from 1983 to 1990, he was responsible for building or remodeling 22 schools and handling $100 million in construction funds.
The King County Auditor's Office received the first Lennis Knighton Award for its 1994 management audit of temporary contract workers within the Department of Metropolitan Services. The national award is presented annually to the best overall audit by the National Association of Local Government Auditors. The winning audit reviewed expenditures for temporary workers and determined whether the contracts were in compliance with existing policies, procedures and regulations. The cost of temporary workers, according to the audit's findings, increased from $119,654 in 1985 to almost $9.5 million in 1994. Among other findings, auditors pointed out that budgetary controls over temporary employees were inadequate, and that temporary employees were not always more economical than full-time employees.
The Seattle Housing Authority has been designated as a High Performer by the Seattle HUD Office under the "Public Housing Management Assessment Program." The assessment covered the Housing Authority's fiscal year ending September 30, 1995.
Wall Data Incorporated announced the promotion of Bill Derrick to the position of vice president of operations. Derrick, a veteran in the electronic marketing and software distribution industry, will be responsible for Wall Data operations in North America and serve as a liaison for international operations coordination. He will manage electronic distribution, publishing engineering, international publishing, publishing systems, purchasing materials and product fulfillment functions at Wall Data. Derrick will report directly to Kevin Vitale, vice president of operations and services. In addition, the company has appointed Lee Klepinger to the newly created position of vice president/worldwide training. Klepinger's worldwide responsibilities include developing training programs for Wall Data customers and business partners, as well as for company employees.
The Seattle-King County Board of Health selected three non-elected members to the Board. Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., N.D., President of Bastyr University, is an internationally recognized expert on the practice of natural medicine and its impact within the health care system. Also appointed to the Board were Alvin J. Thompson, M.D., MACP and Karen A. VanDusen, M.S.P.H. Dr. Thompson brings 50 years of experience in clinical practice in internal medicine/gastroenterology and 42 years as clinical faculty at the UW School of Medicine. Ms. VanDusen brings 30-plus years of experience in academic, private and public sectors.
Every Wednesday at noon throughout the summer, Ballard residents, visitors and shopkeepers can learn more about local small businesses during "Small Business in the Park," a brown bag lunch series at Bergen Place Park. These free presentations are open to the public and are presented by the Micro Business Alliance (MBA). Each week the series, which begins May 29th, will feature a different small-business owner interviewed live by the administrator of Ballard's MBA, Ray White. All of the small businesses represented in the series are members of the Micro Business Alliance.
NBBJ has promoted 16 employees to senior associate and 22 to associate this month. New senior associates include Anne Cunningham, Dan Dennison, Ruben Gonzales, Lisa Hudson, Scott Johnson, Dick lee, Bill Lehtonen, Carl Muskat, Diane Lindberg-Nigh, Teri Oelrich, Gordon Phillips, Daniel Skaggs, Keith Smith, Jeri Vaughn, David Yuan and Brad Zylstra. Promoted to associate were Gretchen Addi, Brodie Bain, Ann Buratto, Cave Burger, Bruce Dahlstrom, Robin Dalton, Arthur Furukawa, Grant Gustafson, Lisa Harrington, Dave Helton, Karen Hillam, Paula Kistler, Greg Lombardi, Jennifer Mann, Carol Nording, Dan Podoll, Leo Raymundo, Laurel Rech, Don Schuman, Bragdon Shields, Peter Tsugawa and Alan Young.
James S. Dransfield and John E. Zipper have been promoted to vice president at AGRA Earth & Environmental, Inc. Both are members of the firm's national operations team. Dransfield has been with AGRA for 14 years, and managers the firm's local environmental group. He has managed geotechnical and environmental projects involving landfill development and closure, stormwater control, landslide investigations, drainage and dewatering designs and subsurface contaminant characterization and remediation. Zipper has been with AGRA for 10 years, and manages AGRA's Kirkland, Tacoma, and Spokane geotechnical engineering and materials testing groups. His management experience includes highways, bridges, retail and commercial structures, water storage reservoirs and standpipes, public works projects, and heavy foundations.
Alan Lambert has launched The Atropos Project (TAP), a new management and marketing service for architectural, engineering and construction firms (See "Design Firm Developments", this section). Lambert has been involved in management and marketing for design and construction companies for over 15 years. He was most recently director of marketing for Wood/Harbinger, Inc. for six years. Lambert is currently the Pacific Northwest's Regional Director for the Society for Marketing Professional Services.
Robert Reed and Susan Christofides have recently been promoted to associates at Baylis Brand Wagner Architects. Reed, who joined the firm in 1990, specializes in single and multi-family residential projects and retail projects. His residential projects have been recognized through a City of Kirkland Design award and the AIA Seattle Times Home of the Month Award. Christofides is comptroller and business manager at Baylis Brand Wagner. Before joining the firm in 1989, She worked for Ibsen Nelson & Associates and Hamilton Architects. She served for five years on the board of the Society of Design Administrators, including a year as president.
Richard H. Abe has joined the Easters & Kittle, Inc. in Issaquah as project manager, with twenty years of experience in civic, commercial, and historic facilities. He was previously with Fred N. Sutter & Associates Inc. of Honolulu. Abe is currently at work on a variety of commercial projects as well as the Issaquah Police and Jail facility.
Lynda A. Reite has joined the business development group of W&H Pacific as marketing coordinator. She has more than three years of experience working within the design and environmental industry, and her responsibilities will include press releases, proposal coordination, client database management, and market research.
Craig Freas has joined Andersen Bjornstad Kane Jacobs (ABKJ), Inc. as vice president in charge of Alaska operations. Freas has been in charge of design for buildings, marine facilities, sanitary engineering structures and industrial complexes. Ken Andersen joins the firm as senior project manager, responsible for co-managing the Anchorage office and directing marketing. Previously with Tryck Nyman & Hayes, he has been responsible for engineering projects throughout Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and the Pacific Rim. ABKJ has also promoted four staff members. Adam R. Koczarski has been advanced to senior project engineer. With 14 years of structural engineering experience, recent projects include St. Barbara's Church in Black Diamond, Mt. Baker Elementary in Mt. Vernon, the Aviation Technology Building in Anchorage, and the Kodiak Credit Union in Kodiak. Alan C. Johnson has also been named senior project engineer. He is currently project engineer for the Federal Detention Center at SeaTac. Other projects include the ARCO Bayview seismic study in Anchorage, the Federal Reserve Bank in Seattle, and the Little Mountain Elementary School in Mt. Vernon. Michael A. Bramhall has been promoted to the level of project engineer, with seven years of experience in structural engineering. He has played a role in the design of six office buildings for Microsoft World Headquarters in Redmond and is currently project manager for Microsoft's Augusta Building and Building # 28. Gary F. Conner has also been named project engineer. He has been with ABKJ for six years, and his project experience includes the seismic assessment and retrofit design of the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge, the Fauntleroy Expressway, the Spokane Viaduct widening, and the Stossel Bridge.
John Chadwell has been named a associate at ESM Inc. of Federal Way. He is currently at work on Intel Corporation's new industrial facility at Northwest Landing in DuPont, a five-building manufacturing and research complex.
