SWMB

Ron Klemencic has been promoted to the level of principal at Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire Inc. (SWMB). Klemencic has been instrumental in the firm's expansion into overseas markets and in introducing innovative technologies into countries with emerging building industries. He is also active on a local level, working on developments such as Emerald Downs Racetrack, downtown Seattle's Pacific Place, and Microsoft Redmond West. Bob Anderson has joined SWMB as a top project manager. During the last eight years of his 18-year career, Anderson has served as structural engineer for 14 buildings on Microsoft's corporate campus.

Hewitt Isley

Hewitt Isley has advanced Dennis E. Haskell, Paul A. Shema and Kris R. Snider to the level of principal. As an architect and planner, Haskell has 26 years experience in managing interdisciplinary design and development projects. He is chair of the Seattle Design Commission and of the Pine Street Advisory Task Force. Through his management of major transportation planning projects, he helped position Hewitt Isley as one of the area's authorities on the planning and design of multimodal facilities and ferry terminals. Shema was instrumental in the design and execution of two major downtown Seattle waterfront projects. He has been a project architect with the firm for 14 years. Snider is director of the landscape architecture studio at Hewitt Isley. Since joining the firm six years ago, he has been involved in designing open space and landscape improvements for urban housing, waterfront projects, commercial developments and transportation projects. In addition, Kevin J. Ryden has been promoted to the level of senior associate. He has managed and designed award-winning architectural projects and interpretive exhibits, and is presently at work on Sinclair Landing, a downtown Bremerton waterfront development plan.

RCA

Richard Carothers, president of Richard Carothers Associates (RCA), recently served as juror for the 1996 Excellence in Highway Design Competition in Washington D.C. The perennial design awards program attracted more than 260 entries in 10 categories. Carothers was joined by jurors from Boston, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Washington D.C.

KPFF

Peter J. Martins has joined the Portland office of KPFF Consulting Engineers as a civil designer. He will focus on waterfront and marine engineering, and is currently working on Boones Ferry Marina, Columbia Shores Marina, and the East Bank Waterfront Park Project for the City of Portland.

Zervas Group

Christopher Bigos has joined the staff of Zervas Group Architects of Bellingham as an architect-intern. He holds a master's degree in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was first place recipient of the Charles Correa Design Competition. He is now at work on the design of a waterfront home for a best-selling fiction writer.

Art Anderson

Mark Dorsey has returned to the civil engineering and site development division of Art Anderson Associates. As a senior civil engineer, Dorsey is now at work on the Doctors Clinic of Silverdale and Bucklin Place Gas/Convenience and Video Store. Dorsey's prior projects include Harrison Memorial Hospital South Kitsap Campus and Kitsap County Youth Expansion. Kathleen Hayes has joined the administrative staff of Art Anderson Associates as receptionist.

Weber + Thompson

Albert Kong has been named job captain at Weber + Thompson Architects. He oversees a wide variety of projects, including commercial developments, in the Seattle area.

McClatchy Newspapers

Kelso Gillenwater, publisher of The News Tribune of Tacoma for the past five years, has been named vice president of operations for McClatchy Newspapers, the California-based company that owns The News Tribune. Gillenwater will oversee McClatchy's Bee newspapers in Sacramento, Fresno and Modesto, Calif., and its Washington, D.C., bureau. He also will supervise electronic publishing operations at each newspaper and nationally through Nando.net, the group's major online news service. The Wiley Brooks Company Phil Watkins has joined The Wiley Brooks Company, a Seattle-based public affairs firm, as a senior partner. Watkins previously served as district director to Congressman Randy Tate. Wiley Brooks specializes in issue management and advocacy, crisis communications, web-site design and governmental relations.

RiverRock Grill and Alehouse

The RiverRock Grill and Alehouse, located at Maplewood Golf Course, has hired Gregory Werry as executive chef and Patrick Nowack has dining room manager. Werry has served as chef d'cuisine at the Seattle Westin Hotel's Palm Court Restaurant, and was trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Nowack was food and beverage director at the Monterey Country Club and Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert, California.

Umberto's

Seattle's Umberto's Ristorante and Il Piccolo Bar has hired Douglas Zellers as dining room manager and has promoted Daniel Meisner to catering sales manager. Zellers formerly was the assistant general manager/food and beverage director at the Best Western Conference Center in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Meisner was Umberto's banquet captain.

Sheraton Seattle

Rod Lapasin has been named director of catering for the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers. Before joining the Sheraton, Lapasin was the general manager of McCormick & Schmick's Catering in Seattle where he directed off-premise services.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum at Crate's Point, neat The Dalles, Oregon, has named Margaret Anne Lane as executive director and William La Marche as director of development. Both will be employed by Crate's Point, the umbrella organization that will oversee the day-to-day operations of both the discovery center and museum. The center is scheduled to open in May 1997 and will serve as the official interpretative center for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and will interpret the geologic, natural, and cultural history of the Columbia River Gorge. The Wasco County Historical Museum will interpret the history of Wasco County, which was once was the largest county in the United States. Amenities to the museum project include a theater, classrooms, cafe, museum store, and River Gallery.

Columbia Bank

Columbia Bank, a subsidiary of Columbia Banking System, Inc., a Tacoma-based bank holding company, has opened at new branch located in the Edgewood/Milton area. Michael Butcher will serve as the branch manager. The new Edgewood/Milton branch will be temporarily located at Surprise Lake Square at 900 Meridian East, Suite 17 in Milton, until after the holidays when construction on a new facility will begin.

The Freeland Group

Eighteen area business executives have joined forces to form The Freeland Group, a broad based management consulting firm focused on the growing, small-to-mid sized companies of the Pacific Northwest. Tyler Conrad, one of the founding partners will act as the firm's president. Bill McCutcheon will act as managing principal. The Freeland Group's position is to make consulting servies afforable to the smaller sized companies. Fees will run 40 to 50 percent less than most management consulting firms. The Freeland Groups' offices are located in Bellevue.
