The Board of Trustees of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has appointed Leland Hartwell as the center's third president and director, effective July 1. Hartwell is an award-winning geneticist and has been the Center's senior scientific advisor since 1996. He will succeed Dr. Robert Day who has been president and director for 16 years. Hartwell's work has contributed substantially to the scientific understanding of cell division. He has won a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Institutes of Health Merit Award and the Gairdner Foundation International Award.
Phyllis Campbell, president and CEO of U.S. Bank of Washington, has been selected as chair of United Way of King County's 1998 fund-raising campaign.
Mike Deller, executive director of the Port of Everett, has announced his resignation. Deller will move to Everett Mutual Savings Bank where he will serve as executive vice president. Ed Paslovskis, the Port's deputy director, will serve as interim executive director during the search for Deller's replacement.
Anne Foster has joined The Rockey Company as vice president. Based in Seattle, with offices located in Spokane and Portland, The Rockey Company offers consulting services in public relations, public affairs, investor relations, marketing communications and graphic design.
The Washington State Convention & Trade Center's Sales & Events Services Department has hired Susan Newcomb as sales account executive, and promoted James Cadungug to Event Coordinator I. Newcomb will focus on local and regional clients seeking to hold events within 18 months of the prospective event date. Cadungug will be responsible for assisting local and regional clients with the various details of event planning.

The location will accommodate the rapid growth in education services and allow for expansion into horizontal markets. TransACT Education, Inc., a division of TransACT Communications, Inc., provides legal and policy translation services to school districts, enabling them to professionally communicate with non-English speaking families. TransACT Communications, Inc., was founded in 1994 to develop software solutions for public and private school districts.
Larry Swift, executive director of the Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA), has been named the first recipient of the Shannon Award for Excellence in School Boards Association Leadership presented by the National School Boards Association (NSBA).
