Hacker

Architect James Bibb has joined Thomas Hacker & Associates Architects of Portland. He was previously with Algren Olson and Sidow of Stockholm and also with Jensen Douglas Architects in southeast Alaska. He is currently at work on the Portland State University Urban Center project. Becca Cavell has joined the firm to work on the Multnomah County Branch Libraries project, which involves the renovation of ten branch libraries and design of three new libraries. She was previously a designer and construction administrator for the renovation of Portland City Hall. Kathleen Walsh has joined the firm as business development director, with over 15 years of experience in the biotechnology, architecture and engineering industries. She will serve as the president of the Portland Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services next year.

KPFF

Tom Kearns has been hired as project manager for KPFF Consulting Engineers in Portland. He works in the facade consulting group, part of KPFF's structural division, where he produces shop drawings and detailing for projects. He specializes in stone facades, paving and interior veneer. Bret Heckenberg has been hired as a project engineer and project manager in the structural division. He is currently working on the Nike World Campus North Expansion Conference Center in Beaverton. Clinton Ambrose has joined the firm as a structural engineer. He is working on the Fox Tower, a hospital and a high school. John T. Mayer has also been hired as a structural engineer, and is at work on the assembly hall for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City. He is attending graduate school at Portland State University. Kerry Waters has been hired as a structural drafter. He is currently working on microelectric pedestals at Intel and is taking engineering classes at Portland State University.

Squier

Glen L. Strachan is the new project manager of the Redmond office of Squier/HGI Associates. The Redmond office represents a merger of Hydro-Geosciences, Inc. (HGI) and Lake Oswego, Oregon based Squier Associates. Before incorporating HGI in 1991, Strachan had worked with CH2M Hill, Woodward-Clyde and Ebasco. He specializes in geological and geotechnical elements of heavy civil and infrastructure projects, transportation facilities, water supply utilities and landslides. Doug Geller has joined Squier Associates as a senior hydrogeologist, specializing in groundwater resource development and protection. He is currently managing the design and installation of the groundwater monitoring network for the City of Portland's well field. Libby Dawson Farr, new marketing coordinator for Squier Associates, holds a doctorate in architectural history. She is a writer with 10 years of experience as owner of an advertising/marketing firm. She has been an assistant professor of architecture at Lewis & Clark College and produced a documentary film about the late architect Pietro Belluschi.

Leonard, Boudinot & Skodjie

Tyann Schlimmer has joined the staff of Leonard, Boudinot & Skodjie, Inc. of Mt. Vernon as an engineering technician. She previously worked in the engineering department of Tree Top, Inc. in Selah.

Division One Court of Appeals

Martin Appelwick has been named to a new 10th seat on the Division One Court of Appeals by Governor Gary Locke. Appelwick is a 44-year-old attorney with a practice in Seattle. In 1983 he was elected to the state House of Representatives and rose to the rank of House minority leader. His annual salary will be $107,000 and he will stand for election in the fall.

King County Superior Court

Dean Lum has been named by Governor Gary Locke to the King County Superior Court to fill a position vacated by the resignation of Judge Ricardo Martinez. The 40-year-old Lum is of council with the Seattle law firm of Bullivant Houser Bailey. His salary will be $101,000 and he is up for election this fall.

LISC/NEF

Southeast Effective Development (SEED) was this year's recipient of the "No Guts No Glory" award from the Local Initiatives Support Corp. (LISC) and the National Equity Fund (NEF). SEED completed the first phase of renovations at the Lake Washington Apartments, formerly the Seward Park Estates. The 366 apartments had been the scene of drug dealing and gang activity. When all 10 phases of the $24 million renovation are completed in 1999, the complex will have affordable units available to families below 60 percent of median income. Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program (CHHIP) won an award for continued excellence in non-profit housing development and management and Inter*Im Community Development Association won an award for outstanding design in affordable housing for the Highland Gardens project in Klahanie.

Gleason/Tucker head Environmental Works

Jan Gleason was named Executive Director of Environmental Works last month. Her firm, Gleason & Associates Architects, merged with Environmental Works last year. Associate Roger Tucker was named Director of Architecture. Environmental Works is a non-profit community design center which serves as a community design and central resource center for the disadvantaged areas of our community. Mark Spitzer, previous Executive Director, led Environmental Works since 1995 and has co-directed the company with Jan Gleason since 1997. Environmental Works will hold their annual open house this Friday, June 19, at 402 15th Avenue East from 4 pm to 7 pm The public is invited.

Bassetti

Bassetti Architects has been selected to design the King County Library System's new Woodmont branch. The new 5,250-square foot library, to be located at 26800 Pacific Highway South, will provide library services to residents in the area of south Des Moines and north Federal Way. The $2.8 million project is funded from the Library District's bond issue for new construction and capital funds.
