AIA Honor Awards call for entries

AIA Seattle invites all architects in the state of Washington to submit recently completed work and conceptual objects for recognition in the 1998 Honor Awards for Washington architecture. Submittal packets are now available from AIA Seattle by calling 448-4938. The entry application and fee deadline is Oct. 19, and the cost is $165 to AIA members and $250 to all other architects. Entry submission deadline is Nov. 6, and the awards presentation is on Nov. 16.

Housing demonstration project awards

Awards for Design Demonstration Projects, now on display at Seafirst Gallery in Columbia Center, will be announced at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 in the gallery. A reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The projects will be selected by an interdisciplinary jury representing the Office of the Mayor, Seattle Department of Construction and Land Use, Seattle City Council, neighborhood groups, architects, real estate developers and building professionals. The award winners, to be announced by Mayor Paul Schell and Seattle City Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck, will be assisted by the city through the design review and permitting process. Submittals to the program represent real projects that push the envelope of codes, financing and other factors that restrict the creation of affordable housing in Seattle neighborhoods. On Sept. 17, projects selected for award will be presented by project team members and considered by a panel, including jury members and others. The panel will be moderated by Mark Hinshaw, director of urban design for LMN architects.

SAME meeting

The Society of American Military Engineers will convene Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Swedish Club near downtown Seattle. Executives from Hart Crowser, Berger-ABAM Engineers, Inca Engineers and Shapiro will be leading an executive panel discussion during this month's luncheon. The discussion will focus on working successfully with the public sector. The lunch meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. The Swedish Club is located at 1920 Dexter Ave. N. The cost is $12, paid at the door. For reservations call Lynn Carroll at 674-1800.

Regence BlueShield

Claudia Parker has been promoted to senior product account executive at Seattle's Regence BlueShield, a Northwest health care plan. Parker formerly served as an account exeuctive. Julie Herrera has been named an account executive. Rob Eaton has been appointed vice president of membership services for The Regence Group, an alliance of health plans including Regence BlueShield. Eaton formerly served as associate general counsel for Regence BlueShield.

Arbeit Communications

Arbeit Communications , a Bellingham-based graphic design studio specializing in animation and 3-D modeling, won second place in Animatek's International Design Competition.

Department of Parks and Recreation

The King County Department of Parks and Recreation has announced a public/private partnership with Bellevue hospitality firm The Competitive Edge to operate two of the department's rental facilities: Clise Mansion at Marymoor Park and Issaquah Lodge at Beaver Lake Park. King County will continue to own the facilities while The Competitive Edge will schedule events and operate them.

Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission

Paul J. Dayton was appointed by the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission to serve the remaining two years of a three-year term. Dayton is partner in the Short Cressman & Burgess law firm, where he practices in the area of employment law and commercial litigation. The commission enforces the Seattle code of ethics, Seattle elections code, Seattle elections pamphlet code, and Seattle whistleblower protection code.

Bellevue Community College

Bellevue Community College and the Seattle King County Private Industry Council are creating a program designed to teach information technology skills to displaced workers. The program targets workers underrepresented in information technology fields, for example, women, workers age 40 and over, and persons with disabilities. The college will customize training courses in Microcomputer Technical Support, Online Technical Writing, Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer and Microsoft Certified System Engineer. Bellevue Community College's NorthWest Center for Emerging Technologies received a three-year $2 million renewable grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant will provide funding for curriculum development and educational products and services.

KBTC

Tacoma mayor and former state legislator Brian Ebersole has accepted the position of development director at Bates' public television station, KBTC. Ebersole will be responsible for developing and marketing the station's transition from analog to the FCC-required digital format.

Mortenson

Rodger Benson has been named director of business development for M.A. Mortenson Co. of Bellevue. He will be responsible for leading the company's market analysis, strategic planning, marketing and business development functions. Benson holds a construction management degree from the University of Washington.

Fluor Daniel

Ronald D. Hanson has been named president and chief executive officer of Fluor Daniel Hanford Inc., the contractor managing the Hanford nuclear reservation for the U.S. Department of Energy. Hanson has been acting president since June 30.

CH2M Hill

CH2M Hill has announced that Don Davis has joined the company as a senior construction project manager. Davis has 25 years of experience on large capital projects, including building construction, transportation, utilities and industrial projects. He will manage CH2M Hill projects throughout the Puget Sound area. Prior to joining the company, Davis was project director for King County's $175 million Harborview Medical Center expansion and renovation project.

Shannon & Wilson

Shannon & Wilson President J. Ronald Salley has been elected to the executive committee of the Design Professionals Coalition (DPC). DPC, which consists of presidents or senior principals of leading architecture and engineering firms, provides a forum for critical political and public policy issues in Congress and the Executive Branch.

Hart Crowser

Martin Miller has joined Hart Crowser, Inc. as a principal and manager of the Seattle office's sediment services division. He holds a Ph.D. in oceanography, and recently served as chief of the coastal hydrodynamics branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' waterways experimentation station in Vicksburg, Miss. Robin Kirschbaum, a recent graduate of the University of Washington, has joined Hart Crowser as a sediment remediation engineer, responsible for evaluating and controlling pollution sources and for assessing river hydraulics and flow.

Berger/ABAM

Ed Blessing was been promoted to senior construction specialist at Berger/ABAM, and will concentrate on waterfront and public works projects. Dick Platt, a certified engineer-technician, has been promoted to the level of designer.

Entranco

Mike Terrell has joined Entranco as a project manager for the firm's transportation services group. He has 14 years of experience in the development of roadways, walkways, bicycle improvements and pedestrian facilities. Terrell was project engineer for the City of Bellevue's I-90 pedestrian/bicycle facility, which constructed a critical missing link to the Mountains to Sound Greenway.

HDR

Harris Falkin has been hired by HDR as director of the justice program in the Northwest Region for Omaha-based HDR. Falkin, an engineer in the firm's Bellevue office, has most recently been assisting the state Department of Corrections in site selection and environmental assessment. Prior to joining HDR, Falkin was vice president of Anderson Bjornstad Kane Jacobs Inc.

PSI

Michael O'Grady has joined PSI, an engineering testing firm, as senior vice president. O'Grady recently served as managing principal and vice president for Law Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. of Houston.

Emick Howard & Seibert

Brett Conway has been promoted from director of architecture to principal of Emick Howard & Seibert, Inc. He joined the firm in 1995 and is now principal-in-charge of all architectural projects, including three facilities for Spokane Railway Credit Union, Columbia Bank, Fox Sports Northwest, Entercom Communications and Tower Realty Management. Jim Haack has been promoted from project manager to senior architectural designer. He joined the firm in 1996. Haak is now at work on Kitsap Federal Credit Union, Acordia Northwest, Continental Bank and Columbia Bank.

Berger

Caitlin Evans rejoined The Berger Partnership as project manager. She was most recently owner of Caitlin Evans Gardens, a design-build landscape firm specializing in resource conservation and education. She now manages several large residential projects. Jonathan Morley joined Berger as a project manager. He is now at work on the Lincoln Reservoir on Capitol Hill, Parker Stadium at Oregon State University, Sultan School District athletic fields, and ongoing projects at Edmonds Community College. Conrad Plyler has moved from the position of intern to official staff member at Berger. His projects include KOMO headquarters and Redmond Ridge. Julie Miles has joined Berger as the newest member of the technical staff. She previously worked for Woodland Park Zoo, where she recently completed the Butterflies and Blooms project. She is currently at work on the Penrose Memorial Library at Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington.

Anderson Koch & Smith

Amanda Parks has joined Anderson Koch & Smith as marketing coordinator. Leslie Klein has joined the firm as an interior designer, now working on a residential project. John Marx, who recently joined the firm, is project architect for the Rapid Response Facility at Bangor. Gordon Hicks has joined the firm as an architect, now working on the design of a study center for the University of Washington at Friday Harbor campus. Architect James Shanahan is now working on the design of the Plateau Golf and Country Club. Kelly Schroeder has joined the firm as an administrative assistant.

BOORA

Phil H. Duong has joined BOORA Architects of Portland as a computer graphics specialist. He was previously a public relations assistant at Portland Center Stage. P.V. Odhiambo, who also recently joined the firm, is a design assistant for the expansion and renovation of Terwilliger Plaza, a continuing care retirement center in Southwest Portland. Christopher Purdy has joined BOORA as project manager for a multimillion dollar renovation and restoration of Seattle's Cinerama Theatre. Stephen Weeks has rejoined BOORA after earning a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, and is now working on the expansion and remodel of the Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane.

ESM

Steve T. Lee has joined ESM Consulting Engineers, L.L.C. as a civil engineer, and is currently working on Bainbridge Island road improvements and Highlands Storm Drainage project. Brian W. Hinthorne has joined the firm as a civil engineer, working on a pump station upgrade on the Weyerhaeuser Corporate Campus for Lakehaven Utility District and on Snoqualmie Ridge. Dan J. Hutchinson has joined the survey division of ESM as senior survey technician. He is currently working on Snoqualmie Ridge. Don C. Lapp has joined ESM as a drafter, and Carl J. Roberts as an engineering technician. Phil Williams has joined Gardner Consultants, the Public Works Division of ESM, as an engineering designer.

Earth Tech

Jeffrey S. Elekes has joined the Bellevue office of Earth Tech as senior project manager. He was most recently project manager for the City of Lynnwood, where he oversaw design and construction of the $75 million Alderwood Mall Parkway and I-5 overpass. Maren Van Nostrand has joined Earth Tech as an environmental planner, with expertise in growth management planning and cultural resource management. She was recently natural resource planner for King County and is now at work on the Maple Valley Comprehensive Plan.

Leonard, Boudinot & Skodje

Mark Luond has been promoted to associate at Leonard, Boudinot & Skodje in Mount Vernon. Luond has been with the firm for 10 years as a surveyor.

Hills & Associates

Sherrill Johnson has been named an associate with Hills & Associates Interior Design and Planning. Her clients have included Crown Pacific, Extensis, Compass Management & Leasing, Spieker Properties and Realty Trust.

Guido Perla

Tom Anderson has joined Guido Perla and Associates as mechanical engineer. He will apply his experience in the mechanical and marine fields to the design of commercial and private vessels.

Marshall

Tom Wallace has joined the Olympia office of Marshall & Associates as vice president, arranging custom geographic information system (GIS) services for clients. Jason Henderson, Jennifer Landaas and Jim Hershberger have joined the firm as GIS analysts.

Sara Gerrish, John Ide and Adrianna Jumping Eagle have recently joined GA Design of Bellevue as graphic designers.

Business Interiors Northwest

Candace Crowley has been named division manager for the Seattle commercial sales division of Business Interiors Northwest, an office furniture dealer. The firm has named Burt Beusch general manager of business interiors services. Drew Blevins is the new division manager for the company's Atria office furniture sales division.
