Dr. Walt Mahoney has been appointed senior vice president, research and development at Epoch Biosciences of Bothell. Most recently, he was chief scientific officer at Quantum Dot Corp. and has held previous posts at Biotope, Sanofi, ImmunoNuclear Corp. and was a professor of genetics and cell biology at the University of Minnesota. Epoch Biosciences develops proprietary products with commercial applications in the genomics and molecular diagnostics fields.
Scott Charney will join Microsoft in April as chief security strategist. Charney is currently a principal for PricewaterhouseCoopers' cybercrime prevention and response practice. At Microsoft, Charney will focus on developing strategies to enhance the security of the company's products, services and infrastructures as part of the Trustworthy Computing initiative.
Four new members have joined the executive team at Seattle Coffee Company: Sheri Miksa, chief operating officer; Marge Barnette, vice president of new business development; Martin C. Wehr, chief foodservice officer; and Sue McNab, vice president of people services and development. Miksa was previously with Seattle Coffee Co. as COO; Barnette was previously vice president of new business development for Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits; Wehr previously held executive positions with Aegis Analytical Corporation, Colorado Greenhouse, Hauser, Dreyer's and Edy's Grand Ice Cream, Minibar, and Heublein; and McNab has held executive positions with Wizards of the Coast, Ernst Home Centers and Lanoga Corporation.
Robert E. Carlson, manager of the Western Washington Fair Association, has been given a Hall of Fame Award from the Western Fair Association. Carlson was honored for outstanding contributions and achievements to the fair industry. Carlson has been Western Washington Fair manager for 31 years.
Riddell Williams has named Patrick McVey as managing principal. McVey joined Riddell Williams in 1980, he succeeds Bruce Bjerke, who has been in the position since 1997

Christine Mead is the new chief financial officer at Safeco. Mead was previously with Travelers Insurance where she was senior vice president and chief financial officer in the company's property casualty business.
Dan Schwartz has joined RealNetworks as vice president of advertising sales. He will oversee all advertising sales strategy and execution for the company. Schwartz was previously with Ziff-Davis where he most recently served as vice president and director of Smart Business Magazine.
Xcyte Therapies has appointment Scott Minick to chairman. Minick has served as a consultant to Xcyte Therapies for the past two years. He was previously a venture partner with Arch Venture Partners and the president and chief operating officer of Sequus Pharmaceuticals. Seattle-based Xcyte is developing therapies that harness the power of the immune system to treat cancer and other serious illnesses.
The Federal Aviation Administration awarded Breakwater Security Associates a contract to develop and teach an anti-cyberterrorism course to key government technical personnel. The objective of the course is to provide strategies for protecting major government applications, network infrastructure mainframes and Internet access points. Breakwater is a Seattle-based firm focusing on computer security.
Bank of America hired Michael Conn as president of the west region of the private bank. He will be based in San Francisco and have responsibility for 34 offices in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Conn was previously director of Morgan Stanley's Northern California region.
Steve Cullen has been named CEO at NetMotion Wireless. Cullen held executive positions at AT&T Wireless and Design Intelligence. Craig McKibben, NetMotion's founder and former CEO, will transition from day-to-day operations to a position on the company's board. Kendra VanderMeulen joined its board of directors. NetMotion Wireless develops software that makes wireless data networks more reliable and secure
