The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross serving King and Kitsap counties elected nine new members to its board of directors. Each will serve three-year terms. They are Jennifer Forbes, an attorney at McGavick Graves; Kristina Greene, a senior medical specialist at Tap Pharmaceutical; Kris L. Hill, vice president and controller of Safeco Corp.; Steve Miller, vice president and COO of Pemco Insurance Co.; Laura Pilcher, youth and young adult board member of the YMCA of Greater Seattle; David Pollock, director of Deloitte Consulting; Susan Reinertson, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Region 10; Ann Sobil, executive director of sales and marketing at Belo; and Brian Williamson, regulatory analyst for Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute. James Reitan was re-elected to serve as chairman of the board. He first joined the board of directors in 1994 and worked in personal financial planning and investment.

Office of the Attorney General

Attorney General Rob McKenna announced that Senior Assistant Attorney General Michael Shinn has been selected for the 2007 Governor's Award for Leadership in Management. The award recognizes managers who have demonstrated excellence in carrying out their responsibilities.

LION

Seattle-based LION, Inc., a provider of online lead generation and solutions for the mortgage loan fulfillment process, is cutting 25 percent of its work force, consolidating its Denver and Seattle operations and looking for other ways to cut spending, occupancy costs and marketing. CEO David Stedman said the cuts will help “secure the company's longevity in the marketplace and begin moving the company toward quarterly profitability and positive cash flows.” The cuts will be phased in over the year.

AvalonBay Communities

AvalonBay Communities of Alexandria, Va., was named the 2007 Property Management Company of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders. The judges cited Avalon's training and use of technology to control operating expenses. It also won an award for the Best Rental Apartment Community 5 Stories or Less, Non-Garden for the Avalon Juanita Village in Kirkland.

Workshop on affordable housing June 6

The Housing Partnership, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the supply of affordable housing in King County, is putting on a workshop called “The Ins and Outs: Inclusionary Programs for Affordable Housing” on June 6 in Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Ave. It is designed for local officials, developers, lenders, architects and planners. The workshop will cover the legal, policy and economic questions about incentive programs for including affordable housing. Some cities have started programs but others have been reluctant because of legal concerns. The state legislature has clarified some of the authority of local government and has even allowed cities to make the programs mandatory. The speakers will include Patrick Schneider of Foster Pepper, Arthur Sullivan of A Regional Coalition for Housing (ARCH), Tony To of the Seattle Planning Commission and Elliott Eisenberg of the National Association of Homebuilders. Northwest Yacht Brokers Association

The Northwest Yacht Brokers Association, based in Seattle, promoted Bonnie Bergquist to association manager. Bergquist has been with the association since 2004 in positions that include boat show coordinator and boat show director. The association is a regional trade group of 340 recreational boat brokers and dealers.

Point B Solutions Group

Point B Solutions Group, a professional-services firm specializing in project leadership, opened offices in Los Angeles and Chicago. Janice Anderson opened the Chicago practice after working at the Seattle office for nine years, where she led projects for Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. Patrick McCauley opened the Los Angeles office after working in the Denver office for three years.

Suncadia

Suncadia, an all season resort near Roslyn, was invited to join the Associated Luxury Hotels International group. The new partnership gives Suncadia access to an industry advisory council and to national marketing campaigns. Suncadia is managed by Destination Hotels and Resorts, headquartered in suburban Denver.
