Emerald BioStructures

Emerald BioStructures of Bainbridge Island hired Diana Wetmore as vice president of business development and alliances. Wetmore has worked at Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics and Geneprot.

Evergreen Hospital Medical Center

Robert Malte has been named CEO at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center in Kirkland. Malte was president and CEO at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo. He has also worked at ThedaCare and Touchpoint Health Plan. Malte replaces Steve Brown who left in February to become president/CEO of the Mount Nittany Medical Center in Pennsylvania.

Swedish

Swedish hired Douglas Backous, who specializes in otology, neurotology and skull base surgery. Backous joins the Swedish Neuroscience Institute after more than 12 years at Virginia Mason.

Oles Morrison Rinker & Baker

Douris
Meghan Douris joined Oles Morrison Rinker & Baker in Seattle as an associate attorney. Douris has experience in cases involving professional malpractice, differing site conditions, delay and impact claims, and geotechnical engineering. She previously worked at Zetlin & De Chiara, a firm specializing in construction law, and Gordon & Silber, a defense litigation law firm. She also served as an assistant general counsel with the New York City Department of Design & Construction. Douris holds a law degree from Brooklyn Law School and a bachelor's degree from William & Mary.

Capital Projects Advisory Review Board

Gov. Chris Gregoire appointed Christine McCorkle to the state's Capital Projects Advisory Review Board. McCorkle is replacing Rocky Sharp and represents the specialty contractors industry. She is a project executive at SAK & Associates, a concrete subcontractor in Sumner. She holds a bachelor's degree in construction management and has experience in public design-build, GC/CM and design-bid-build projects.

Ash Grove Cement Co.

The Portland Cement Association gave Ash Grove Cement Co. a 2010 PCA Safety Innovation Award at the group's spring meeting in Chicago. Ash Grove was cited for a safety improvement at its Seattle plant, where employees devised a new way to open mill hatch doors that tend to stick tightly after periods of use. Instead of sledgehammering the door open, which puts significant strain on the body, employees now use a brace and hydraulic jack that can open a door in five minutes.

Lehigh Cement Co.

Lehigh Cement Co.'s plant in Bellingham won a Chairman's Safety Performance Award from the Portland Cement Association for its outstanding safety record. The award was presented at PCA's recent spring meeting in Chicago. Lehigh won in the “Less than 190,000 employee hours” division. PCA is based in Skokie, Ill.

KeyBanc Capital Markets

KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc., the broker/dealer subsidiary and investment banking arm of KeyCorp, said the father and son team of John D. Urbina and Geoff A. Urbina have joined the firm as managing directors, based in Seattle. Both men will be responsible for overseeing the public finance team, working with governments, nonprofits and schools. John Urbina has experience in municipal finance and was lead banker on an array of financings. Geoff Urbina's experience includes financing for a variety of municipal issuers.

North Seattle Community College

Mark Mitsui, current vice president of South Seattle Community College, has been named president of North Seattle Community College, starting July 1. Mitsui has been vice president of student services at South Seattle since 2006, and has also worked at Green River Community College, North Seattle Community College and Renton Technical College. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington.

Northwest Seaport

Northwest Seaport, a Seattle maritime heritage organization on South Lake Union, has named retired Seattle Parks manager Colleen Browne, naval architect and waterfront planning engineer Andrew Bennett and conservationist Barbara Klee to its board of directors. The nonprofit also elected Shannon Fitzgerald as board president and Jim Flies as board vice president. The group is dedicated to the preservation of maritime heritage in the Pacific Northwest.
