Boise Cascade announced the promotion of two of its business leaders. Joanna Barney has been promoted to vice president, Western Operations, Building Materials Distribution (BMD) division. Barney began her career at Boise Cascade in 2005 as an admin manager at the Salt Lake BMD branch. She was promoted to senior location controller in 2012, to branch manager in 2015, and to general manager of BMD Western Operations in 2021. Prior to joining the company, Barney worked at Novell and Ion Laser Technology. She holds a bachelor's degree in business finance from the University of Utah. Troy Little has been promoted to vice president, Finance and Commodity Sales, Wood Products division. Little joined Boise Cascade in 1990 as an internal auditor. He has a broad range of experience on both the financial side and the operational side, including serving as regional manager for six manufacturing facilities in Oregon. Little became Wood Products Division controller in 2016, division financial manager in 2018, and added commodity sales to his responsibilities in 2021. He has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the College of Idaho. Boise Cascade is one of the largest producers of engineered wood products and plywood in North America and a leading U.S. wholesale distributor of building products.

Christina Shin joined Carney Badley Spellman as an associate attorney. She focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation, having experience in a broad range of litigation matters, including breach of contract, real estate, labor and employment, and construction disputes.

Avalara

Avalara, a provider of cloud-based tax compliance automation for businesses of all sizes, announced the appointment of human resources leader Ee Lyn Khoo as its new chief people officer. Her responsibilities include overseeing all global people and culture-related initiatives, including human resources, talent management and acquisition, diversity and inclusion, learning and development, total rewards including compensation and benefits and organizational development. Khoo brings two decades of human resources and diversity, equity, and inclusion experience to Avalara. She has held human resource leadership roles at global companies, including Amazon and General Mills. She most recently served as chief people officer at Redfin. Headquartered in Seattle, Avalara has offices across the U.S. and around the world in Brazil, Europe, and India.

In Seattle, Walsh Construction Co. promoted Aaron Voshell to project engineer; Adam Dempsey to RDF operations manager; Alex Kilcup to superintendent; Brad Lucas to assistant superintendent; Eric Brandon and Whitney Lake to project managers; Paige Paulston to project administrator; and Paul Nelson to senior project manager. Voshell is also supporting the layout department. He has over 30 years of industry experience, starting as a carpenter. Dempsey has over 22 years of industry experience, and has worked as a lead foreman, equipment operator, operations manager, superintendent and project manager. Kilcup has over a decade of experience in the industry, and joined Walsh in 2013 as a laborer. He was assistant superintendent of the concrete division. Lucas joined Walsh in 2015 as a carpenter and transitioned into the role of project engineer in 2017. He has over a decade of experience. Brandon interned with Walsh in 2013 and rejoined in 2014 as a project engineer after earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Washington State University, along with a master's in engineering and technology management, and an MBA. Lake interned with Walsh in 2008. After graduating from the University of Nevada with a degree in business administration and completing the University of Washington's Construction Management Certification Program, she rejoined the company in 2012 as a project engineer. Paulston joined Walsh in early 2020 as an administrative assistant. Nelson started at the company in 1979 as a carpenter. He left in 1982 to start Nelson Construction, a custom residential and multifamily builder, and rejoined Walsh in 2000 as a project manager and superintendent.

In Mukilteo, UMC hired Camilla Yamada as health care market lead. Yamada began her career as manager of plant operations for Providence Health and Services hospital in Polson, Montana. Later, she came to the Puget Sound region as construction project manager for Providence Health and Services in Seattle, and then took a position at Seattle Children's Hospital as director of building and engineering. At UMC, she is responsible for management and oversight of health care clients, projects and strategic opportunities.

In Richland, Hanford Laboratory Management and Integration announced that laboratory manager Don Hardy will retire on Thursday after 37 years at the Hanford Site. Hardy began his career at the 222-S Laboratory and is ending it at the same facility. He also spent time at the Plutonium Uranium Extraction Plant, the Plutonium Finishing Plant, the Waste Sampling and Characterization Facility, and the Tank Farms. Ray Geimer will take over for Hardy. Geimer most recently was a project manager for the 100K Closure Operations with Central Plateau Cleanup Co. He has nearly 40 years of nuclear operations experience working within the Department of Energy Environmental Management complex, including management of nuclear facility operations, management of large-scale projects and programs, deactivation and demolition activities, and nuclear facility construction.

Skanska USA promoted Brian Urban to vice president for the company's building operations in the Seattle region. In this new role, Urban is leading Skanska's K-12 practice, which represents more than $750 million of community-focused projects in the Puget Sound area. He first joined Skanska in 2000 as a project engineer, then moved up to project manager, senior project manager and project executive. Urban has over 25 years of experience in both design and construction, and is skilled in integrated project delivery.

The attorneys and staff of the boutique health care law firm The Nathanson Group will join Lane Powell effective June 1. The Nathanson Group's team of eight attorneys collectively has over 100 years of experience handling the real estate, corporate, and finance aspects of a variety of health care transactions, with particular expertise in the long term care and senior housing industry. The Nathanson Group's founder, Randi Nathanson, will co-chair Lane Powell's newly formed Health Care Transactions Team with Lane Powell shareholder Gabriela Sanchez. The Nathanson Group's nine-person regulatory team operates under the Approvalign tradename. Approvalign is a unique service offered by The Nathanson Group to assist long term care and senior housing owners and operators throughout the U.S. in securing the regulatory authorizations needed to close a transaction. Ultra Safe Nuclear hired Roland Backhaus as vice president of strategic engagements. In this role, Roland will apply his commercial, legal, and technical expertise to strengthen the company's partnerships and develop new alliances. His efforts to expand the company's strategic partners will position Ultra Safe Nuclear to deploy, service, and support its Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) and Fully Ceramic Micro-capsulated (FCM) fuel initiatives across the globe. Backhaus has more than 20 years of experience in the nuclear industry, first as a nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy and more recently as a nuclear energy attorney with several multinational law firms. As a Navy officer, he served on the USS FLORIDA, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, as the reactor control assistant and the assistant chief engineer. As an attorney, Backhaus has advised commercial entities and foreign governments on various aspects of nuclear power programs and related infrastructure issues. His expertise includes vendor procurement, agreements for the construction, operation, and fueling of nuclear power units, and the protection of sensitive technical and corporate information. He received a BS degree from the United States Naval Academy, an MA degree from George Mason University, and a JD degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Seattle-based Qumulo, a data storage and management firm, announced two executive hires that will bolster customer momentum and product innovation within the expansive unstructured data market. Qumulo appointed Eric Brodersen as chief customer officer and Kiran Bhageshpur as chief technology officer. Prior to Qumulo, Brodersen served as COO and president of Impinj, leading the launch of the company's industry-first Internet of Things (IoT) platform, expanding company operations and revenue, guiding its IPO in 2016, and establishing category leadership in item-level connectivity for the IoT. Brodersen also served as the senior vice president of marketing and business development for the Isilon Storage Division of EMC from 2010 to 2013. Bhageshpur was the founder and CEO of Igneous whose unstructured data management solution was deployed across many Fortune 500 companies. Previously, Bhageshpur was an engineering leader at Isilon Systems and the VP of engineering at the Isilon Storage Division of EMC.
