In what is probably the biggest transfer of contaminated property the Northwest has ever seen, the 67-acre Asarco smelter site is being sold — mostly for the cost of cleanup — to Point Ruston LLC, a subsidiary of MC Construction in Lacey.
Under the terms of the sale, approved yesterday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Point Ruston will spend $28 million to finish the cleanup of the property, which became part of the Commencement Bay Superfund site in 1985.
