Vulcan Real Estate is looking at starting construction in the second quarter on an apartment project in the University District.

The complex will be seven stories with 214 units at 4041 Roosevelt Way N.E. There will be 100 parking spaces for cars as well as bike parking and storage underground, and 3,600 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

Runberg Architecture Group is the architect and Exxel Pacific is the general contractor.

Once construction begins, the building should take about 21 months to complete.

Vulcan has owned the site since 2000, according to Lori Mason Curran, the company's real estate investment strategy director. She said the spot has nostalgic value to Vulcan founder Paul Allen because it was once home to a computer lab that he and Bill Gates would sneak into when they were in high school.

The site is close to the university and a future Sound Transit light rail station, and not far from Vulcan's primary neighborhood, South Lake Union.
