MZA put a taper on high-rise tower above landmarked Belltown buildings

Owner Chainqui has changed architects once, and been through at least nine design options for the corner.

Five years ago, Chainqui Development paid about $33.7 million for a corner site at 2005 Fifth Ave., at Virginia Street in Belltown. Plans for knocking down two old buildings and redeveloping were complicated by the 2017 landmarking of the Griffin Building and Sheridan Apartments — meaning their facades must now be preserved.
