Landmarks board places controls on landmarked old Westlake building

This view looks roughly southwest at the possible hotel addition.

The saga of the old American Meter building, at 1001 Westlake Ave. N., is now into its fifth year. Owner GEM Real Estate Partners sought to demolish the squat concrete industrial building and put up a new hotel. Its subsequent landmarking by the city quashed that plan, but no controls were placed on the building — which kept alive the possibility that it could still be razed and replaced.
