September 23, 2021
At a time when so many downtown storefronts are vacant, when so many small businesses are succumbing to the pandemic, we at the DJC were very excited to witness the recent opening of Waterfront Market & Deli, at 1300 Alaskan Way, on the corner of University Street. That's the first commercial tenant at Mack Urban's 16-story, 169-unit Cyrene, which opened to renters three years ago — before the viaduct was demolished. Cameron Kent and Tom Graff of Ewing & Clark brokered the space, and are still offering 1,855 square feet in a second bay also facing Alaskan. (That street is, unfortunately, still under construction; while University still has a bit more paving to do.) Western Neon created the new signage for the 2,000-square-foot deli, which offers fresh soups, beer and wine, plus some fresh produce and a sandwich counter. Made-to-order pancakes are available in the mornings, too. The hours for now are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., though subject to change. Cyrene itself was designed by Ankrom Moisan Architects and Exxel Pacific. Once ahead of the market, it now enjoys unobstructed views of the waterfront; C&W says the apartments are fully leased.
