On Queen Anne Hill, the perils of preservation

It’s taken a lot of steel to reinforce the over century-old masonry structure.

It seemed so simple at the time, back in 2019. The prospective buyer of a shuttered former Masonic Temple, on the top of Queen Anne Hill, submitted the two-story building for landmarking. The city's Landmarks Preservation Board gave the nod of approval, and the midblock property at 1608 Fourth Ave. W. sold two months later for $1.1 million.
