Work began early last year on the future home for Kirkland CrossFit, on a vacant triangle at 1001 Market St., a few blocks uphill from Old Kirkland. Avara Construction made swift work of the two-story project, which has two large apartments over the gym — which is now up and running.
Architect Merrick Lentz designed the steel-framed building, which spans about 14,142 square feet. That includes an underground garage, with about a dozen stalls. There's also a secondary gym/fitness business at grade.
The project owners are tech entrepreneurs, and brothers, Rick and David Cantu, who founded Redapt. The 1001 Market team also included Mane Electric, West Coast Plumbing, Evergreen Refrigeration, Platinum Dirt Works, Smith Fire Systems and Potelco.
Various prior owners and plans emerged for the small but prominent triangle for the past two decades. A small house was removed circa 2007, and it remained stubbornly vacant for years.
