Oldest Americans now hold record share of U.S. real estate wealth, Redfin says

  • Younger Americans, who have grappled with rising prices and mortgage rates, are seeing their portion of the real estate pie shrink.
  • Americans aged 70 and older now control more than a quarter of the nation's real estate wealth, marking a significant shift in generational homeownership trends, according to a new Redfin analysis.

The report released earlier this week shows that adults 70 and up held 26% of the country's $48 trillion in real estate wealth as of the third quarter of 2025. Although slightly lower than the previous quarter's record 26.1%, the share remains far above the levels seen a decade or two earlier, when the oldest Americans held 21.6% and 16.6%, respectively.
