As a youngster growing up in a family of seven kids, the connotation of "second mortgage" meant that somebody was really up against it. It was a big deal, a move never taken lightly. The funds were needed to send more than one child to college, remodel the house or provide grandmother with home care. It seemed the dreaded "second" was either for an unpredictable disaster or an underestimated necessity.
