Q. Dogs are great pets, but when it comes to “man's best friend,” what other animal might well deserve the distinction?
A. The common house mouse — “Mus musculus” — was first an agricultural pest, then a pet, and now has become the most useful organism for our understanding human biology, with about 25 million being used each year in scientific experiments, says Nicholas Bakalar in “The Medicine Cabinet of Curiosities.” Humans and mice are much alike in body organs and tissues, and we suffer from many of the same diseases. Both of our genomes have been successfully mapped, revealing that we share 95 percent of our genetic makeup!
