Foster Pepper

The publication "The Best Lawyers in America" has selected 16 lawyers from Foster Pepper & Sheffelman to include in its 1999-2000 edition. Foster Pepper & Shefelman

Walter W. McMonies Jr. has joined Foster Pepper & Shefelman as of counsel practicing in the real estate group in the law firm's Portland office.

King County Superior Court

Terry Lukens and Seattle Municipal Court Judge Ron Kessler have been named to the King County Superior Court bench. Lukens has a general commercial practice, emphasizing real estate transactions, and formerly served as councilman and mayor of Bellevue.

Washington Association of Realtors

Sam Pace of Executive Real Estate in Bellevue will be sworn in Monday as president of the Washington Association of Realtors. His career began when he was still a boy in Stephenson, Wash., when he and his brother, Sam, bought a house with profits from selling coffee, sandwiches and tackle to Columbia River sport fishers. He eventually became a lawyer and while practicing law in Springfield, Ore., owned a river rafting tour company. Pace moved to Bellevue in 1988 and returned to real estate. In addition to his business, he works as a part-time contract housing specialist for the Seattle-King County Association of Realtors. This work has led him to become a specialist on the affordable housing component of the state Growth Management Act. His term as president is for one year. The state association represents more than 14,000 real estate professionals across Washington.

Harbor Properties

Harbor Properties has promoted Denny Onslow to executive vice president and Doug Hixson to director of operations. Onslow is active in all major aspects of development projects including Harbor Steps North, Carpenters Tower and a new day lodge at Stevens Pass. In addition, he will concentrate on new development initiatives; expanding business, such as fee development; and providing development services to Harbor Resorts, the recreation side of Harbor. He joined Harbor in 1984. Hixson manages and oversees the commercial and residential property management functions for Harbor's 10 downtown Seattle buildings. He is also involved in developing Harbor's meeting facility business and assisting the development team in the design and startup of Harbor Steps North. He began his career with Harbor 13 years ago as a project engineer and has grown with the company in the property management division from operations manager to property manager and now director of operations.

Colliers

Michael Dash of the Seattle office of Colliers International has been appointed senior vice president. The appointment recognizes Dash's achievement as a top producing real estate broker.

Newman & Associates

Denver-based Newman & Associates is expanding its presence in the Pacific Northwest by opening a Seattle office to focus on financing and development of affordable housing and other real estate projects. Mark W. Dean, senior vice president and manager, will direct the Seattle office. A 20-year-old investment firm, Newman was ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Municipal Bond Market Association as the leading underwriter for the number of tax-exempt multifamily bond issues in 1989 and from 1991-97.

Marcus & Millichap

Marcus & Millichap's Robert Sheppard recently brokered the sales of three Seattle apartments. UMF Management sold the 54-plus-1-unit Mercedes Apartments, 617 Third Ave. W., to Dr. Michael Ehsan for $4 million or $72,727 per unit. Ehsan, in turn, sold the 30-apartment and one commercial space Roosevelt Manor, 6219 Roosevelt Way N.E., for $1.85 million to John A. Tong. Sheppard represented Ehsan; and Eric Smith and Peter Larsen, both of Paragon Real Estate Advisors, represented Tong. Sheppard represented the buyer, John Stephanus, and the seller, Sun Circle Trading PTE, in the sale of the 71-unit Hillcrest Apartments, 7524 35th Ave. S.W. The sale price of $4.645 million brings the per-unit price to $65,422. Two other Marcus & Millichap brokers -- Victor Wuamett and Larry Corkins -- represented the buyer and seller in the $2.15- million sale of the 22-unit San Marco Apartments, 1205 Spring St., in Seattle. An out-of-the-country partnership, 1205 Spring Street LLP, sold the property for $97,727 per unit to SM Apartments LLC.

MacPherson's Better Homes and Gardens

Five new agents have joined MacPherson's Better Homes and Gardens at three branches. They are: Irene Gresia, Seattle North; Laurel Conrad and Eric Borja, Renton; and Laurence Smith and Mellonie Duzenberry, Auburn.

Land use law update

Seattle law firm Foster Pepper & Shefelman is hosting the Annual Real Estate & Land Use Update from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers, 1400 Sixth Ave. Among the topics are real estate legislation and case law, changing real estate capital markets, a Growth Management Act update, key land-use decisions and a summary of the Model Toxic Control Act.
