On the Block: Why is Tesla leaving SLU for U Village?

Tesla opened its South Lake Union showroom in 2009 — just in time for the recession, and before that neighborhood really exploded thanks to Vulcan Real Estate and Amazon.

At the time, there were still lingering traces of SLU's automotive past — like the old McKay Ford building, with its terra cotta facade now incorporated into the Allen Institute. Or the old Firestone building, which Martin Selig is now turning into offices across the street from Tesla. Selling electric cars to tech-minded people in SLU made a certain kind of sense, and had historical resonance — if not the smell of gasoline.
