On the Block: Runberg plans 'a modest addition' to Pioneer Square triangle

Back in 2005, four years after the Nisqually earthquake, architect Brian Runberg bought the flatiron-shaped former Bedford Hotel at 1 Yesler Way. That's on the prominent corner of Alaskan Way South, and the little three-story building was then still in the shadow of the viaduct, which was demolished in 2019. Runberg Architecture Group relocated there around 2006, after some minor renovations.

Pioneer Square and the waterfront look much different today. After the Al Boccalino restaurant closed in 2016, the architecture firm expanded its offices down to the ground floor. The over century-old building has almost 6,000 square feet, says Runberg. To its east, what some might mistake for an alley, fenced for parking, is a strip of asphalt — that's owned by Runberg, not the city.
