United Way

Steve Davis, vice president of the Corbis Corporation, has been elected as chair of the United Way of King County Board of Directors for 1997. Other officers elected include: Bruce Brooks, City of Seattle, board chair-elect; Barbara Dingfield, Microsoft Corporation, first vice chair; Jeff Brotman, Costco Wholesale, general campaign chair; Ron Judd, King County Labor Council, vice chair of labor; Sherelle Walker, Federal School District, vice chair of Planning & Distribution; Rev. Acceleration Software

Acceleration Software, developer of computer performance enhancing software, has announced a strategic alliance with Syncronys Softcorp of Culver City, Calif. Syncronys will publish and market Windrenalin hd, a utility developed by Acceleration that improves the performance of any computer running Windows 95. Syncronys Softcorp produces PC and Macintosh performance, memory enhancement, security, and CD-ROM acceleration software. Clint Ballard serves as Acceleration's CEO.

Micron receives ISO 14001 certification

BOISE, Idaho -- Micron Technology Inc. announced last week that it has attained certification under the new ISO 14001 environmental management systems standard. ISO 14001 is a set of voluntary international environmental management standards. The ISO 14001 certificate indicates that third-party experts have examined Micron's environmental systems and found them to be in compliance with the standards. Less than 1,000 companies around the world have ISO 14001 certification. ISO 14000 is the environmental equivalent to the ISO 9000 quality standards. Certification under ISO 14001 requires conformance with four basic elements: implementation of an environmental management system; assurance that procedures are in place to maintain compliance with applicable regulations; commitment to continual improvement; and commitment to overall prevention of pollution. Micron Technology Inc. and its subsidiaries manufacture and market semiconductor components, personal computer systems, remote intelligent communications products and complex circuit assemblies.

Covol announces changes in leadership

LEHI, Utah -- Covol Technologies Inc. has announced that Vern T. May, formerly of Dow Chemical Co., has been appointed to Covol's board of directors. The company also has hired Harlan M. Hatfield, formerly a partner in the Seattle law firm of Oles, Morrison & Rinker, to serve as a member of its senior management team. May replaces Alan Ayers, who resigned from the board. George Ford, Covol's vice president of research and development, also resigned from the board to make room for another outside director. May, a chemical engineer, retired in 1995 as director of health and environmental sciences for Dow Chemical Co. May has a five-year professional degree in chemical engineering. He has served as chairman of The Center for Waste Reduction Technology, a consortium of major chemical process-related companies. Hatfield spent nine years in private practice before coming to Covol. He established Oles, Morrison & Rinker's environmental practice group and has experience in such fields as Superfund liability, underground storage tanks, asbestos contamination, Clean Water Act permitting and other regulatory compliance matters. Covol Technologies is a technology development company that markets itself on "recycling yesterday's waste into tomorrow's resources."

Graham

DLR/John Graham Associates has added 11 new members to the staff. Kim Fong is a project architect, currently at work on the Ala Moana Shopping Center expansion in Honolulu. Previously with FRCH Design Worldwide, she has worked on Plaza Indonesia, the Bangkok Dome Plaza and the Coronado Mall. Greg Nordby is a new architect on the staff, now at work on the Ala Moana Shopping Center Expansion. Jenifer Boyd, a Seattle University graduate, has joined the firm as a project administrator. Victoria Verdoni has been hired as an electrical engineer. A former instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Orlando, Florida. Robert Teske has joined the firm as an electrical designer. Kimberly Paulson has joined DLR/Graham as a mechanical engineer. She is currently at work on the Jackson and Josephine County Jail in Medford. Prior to joining the firm, she was with Washington Natural Gas. David Poole has joined the firm as a computer technician. Ponce Capati, a graduate of the High Tech Institute in Phoenix with a degree in architectural drafting, is a new CAD operator. Carrie Zitka has joined DLR/Graham as a marketing assistant. She was previously with the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington. Gina Marsh and Angee Slaughter are new members of the administrative support staff.

Harris

Ray Vorthman has joined the Seattle office of Harris Group Inc. as a project manager. He left a position as project manager at Sverdrup Facilities, Inc., where he has worked on project for various aerospace, pharmaceutical, appliance, food and beverage and government clients.

Digital Kitchen

Digital Kitchen, a Seattle-based broadcast design firm, has hired Terry Wakayama as senior designer. Wakayama will oversee creative activity for Digital Kitchen clients AT & T Wireless, Intel, Microsoft and Nike.

Futureworks

EvansGroup has formed a new division, Futureworks, dedicated to the integration of digital, interactive communications with traditional media. The staff of Futureworks is already working with clients throughout the United States, including Johnson & Johnson, PetSmart, the Seattle law firm of Preston, Gates & Ellis, and the Dairy Farmers of Washington. Based in Seattle, Futureworks is led by EvansGroup senior vice president and managing director Kent Ord, co-creative directors Tom Farmer and Bob Case, Internet services director Debbie Newton, content flow designer Andrea Linsky and marketing director Katherine Chapman. The division employs 14 full-time staff members.
