The Wireless LAN Alliance (WLANA) has chosen Mike Jones, senior wireless product manager for the Intermec Corporation, as vice president of the organization. WLANA ia an alliance of 15 leading worldwide suppliers of wireless local area network products and technology who represent more than 95 percent of current wireless LAN industry revenues. WLANA is dedicated to promoting increased awareness and knowledge of wireless LANs among the networking and business communities.

Burien Community Computer Center

The Burien Community Computer Center will celebrate its grand opening on April 21. The Center, located in a donated space in the Burien KeyBank building, was created through a cooperative effort on behalf of The City of Burien, Burien's Economic Development Partnership, the Success Foundation of the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce, Highline Community College and the Downtown Burien Business Association. The 32-computer facility was created to meet the needs of a computer-literate workforce, will have classes in software and hardware applications offered through Highline Community College, an opportunities for the public to use the computers.

Shannon & Wilson

J. Duncan Findlay, recently elected to the Shannon & Wilson board of directors, has been officially named as the western region director and branch manager of the Seattle office. He has served as legal counsel for the firm for nearly 20 years and has reviewed and negotiated many of its largest contracts. In addition to his previous responsibilities, he will facilitate business development activities throughout the Northwest. Hollie Ellis, director of computer services at Shannon & Wilson, has been promoted to vice president after 28 years with the firm. His direction in programming, computer science and statistics was critical to the success of some of the firm's largest projects, including the $7 billion Boston Central Artery.

Todd Bovey has returned to the Bellevue office of SSOE as lead mechanical engineer, and has already managed a multi-discipline, fast track project for a high-tech company in California.

Degenkolb

Christopher L. Thompson has been made regional manager and senior associate for Degenkolb Engineers, managing the new Portland office for the firm. Thompson joined Degenkolb in 1996 and has seven years of structural engineering experience in the Portland area, including seismic retrofit and renovation of existing structures for health care, university, corporate and municipal clients. Degenkolb also has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and currently has 71 full-time employees. Jeffrey R. Soulages, who joined Degenkolb in 1990, now serves as an associate on projects in the Portland office. His structural engineering experience includes the new design and post-earthquake repair at the Veterans Administration Sepulveda campus and the design of a new medical office building for Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. He served as editor of the Vision 2000 report "Performance Based Seismic Engineering of Buildings," produced by the Structural Engineers Association of California. Stacy J. Bartoletti joined Degenkolb in 1993 and now serves as a design engineer in the Portland office. Bartoletti's experience includes General Services Administration seismic hazard evaluations at various locations; various seismic upgrades for the state of California; and a seismic evaluation, inspection and upgrade program for Hewlett-Packard. Eric D. Thomas recently joined Degenkolb and serves as a design engineer on projects in the Portland office. He has experience in designing new facilities and the seismic renovation of existing facilities for health care, municipal, corporate, and university clients. John H. Thomsen IV joined Degenkolb in 1995 and serves as a designer in the Portland office. His experience includes university building seismic studies and the seismic program for Hewlett-Packard. David A. Basurto recently joined the Portland office of Degenkolb Engineers as a senior CAD specialist. Paige C. Jackson has joined Degenkolb Engineers in Portland as office manager.
