Paul Baird, president and CEO of the Seattle Crab Co. and Skippers, Inc., is the recipient of the Governor's Child Abuse Prevention Award, presented at and annual awards banquet held by the Washington Council for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (WCPCAN). The event recognizes the efforts of persons and organizations in the state which have demonstrated a commitment to supporting families and protecting children. Other recipients included Senator Shirley Winsley, 28th legislative district, in the Legislator category; Kimberly Mills, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, in the Media category; Partners for Children Youth, and Families of Olympia, Advocate category; Cheryl Pudney, Bonney Lake, and Becky Martin, Walla Walla, Community Volunteer; and First Step Family Support Center, Port Angeles, Program category. WCPCAN is a Governor-appointed council working to support families and prevent child abuse and neglect in all its forms. The Council fund community-based family support programs, educated the public, and advocated social policy to protect children.

Seattle-based Design Intelligence has hired Clent Richardson as vice president of strategic relations.
Seattle-based Primus, a developer of problem resolution software and services, announced that Nortel (Northern Telecom), a global supplier of digital telecommunications equipment, has purchased and begun deployment of Primus SolutionBuilder. SolutionBuilder is problem resolution software that makes it easy for support analysts to capture and share solutions.
Robert George has been appointed treasurer and controller of Esterline Technologies. Located in Bellevue, Esterline is a manufacturer of engineered products for the commercial aircraft, aerospace and defense industries; automated equipment for the production of printed circuit boards and metal fabrication; and instrumentation for quality control.
The potential for using the Internet in medical care will be evaluated through a three-year project, "From Bench to Bedside and Beyond." Researchers will build and test an integrated medical information network for physicians in cities, small towns and suburbs across Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. The network will connect remote physicians to the University of Washington academic medical center, for them to interact with colleagues on patient care, transmit diagnostic images, receive public health alerts and consult with experts via videoconferencing. The study is funded by the National Library of Medicine.
Douglas A. Bors and Eric T. Overton have been named vice presidents at Sparling. They will continue to lead design studios in addition to serving on the board of directors. Bors joined Sparling in 1980 with degrees in architecture and electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He leads the firm's telecommunications and technology studios. His current projects include design for the Zymogenetics addition, technology consulting for Rocky Mountain College and the Microsoft "Augusta" project, and cable system planning for Tacoma Public Utilities. Overton joined the firm in 1985. As principal in charge, he led the design team that designed three million square feet of corporate office and technology space for Microsoft. Other clients include AT&T, Providence Health Systems, Wyoming Medical Center, Advanced Technology Labs and Fisher Properties.
