After Hours: Finnish design show is about to finish

SEATTLE — You can catch the Finnish design show — “Simple, Good, Undecorated Things” — through July 26 at Seattle's Nordic Heritage Museum.

The museum said the title of the exhibit comes from a speech by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto: “We should work for simple, good, undecorated things, but things which are in harmony with the human being and organically suited to the little man in the street.”

Finnish design is celebrated for its humanist philosophy as well as a clean, modern style. The museum said it stands apart “not just because the objects are beautiful, but because... Finnish designers encourage thoughtful consumerism in a wasteful world.”

The show looks at work from the past 15 years — furnishings, fashion, architecture and urbanism — to examine how Finnish life incorporates thoughtful design — from city streets and summer homes to fashion and food.

The exhibition comes from Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

The Nordic Heritage Museum is at 3014 N.W. 67th St. Information is at www.nordicmuseum.org.
