After Hours: New Burke exhibit: the ‘Wild Nearby'

SEATTLE — The Burke Museum is opening a new exhibit June 18 about the North Cascades called “Wild Nearby” that looks at people, plants and animals that live in this remarkably diverse ecosystem of lowlands, forests and mountain peaks — all just a few hours from Seattle. The exhibit runs through Feb. 5, 2017.

The Burke said the Cascades area is one of the most intact wildlands in the U.S.

The exhibit was inspired by “The North Cascades: Finding Beauty and Renewal in the Wild Nearby,” written by William Dietrich and published by Mountaineers Books. Large-scale photos from the book as well as specimens and artifacts from the Burke are in the exhibit, and there is information about ongoing projects at the Burke to track changes in plants and animals of the region, as well as artifacts of the Upper Skagit Tribe. There is also a full-scale replica of a fire lookout made by artist Tori Karpenko.

Information is at burkemuseum.org/wildnearby.
