OLYMPIA — Washington State Parks said Fodor's Travel named Lime Kiln Point State Park in the San Juan Islands as one of America's 10 best state parks, saying it is one of the best places in the world to view whales from land.
Fodor's said Southern resident killer whale pods in Puget Sound often travel and feed together. May through September is the best time to see them.
Lime Kiln Point State Park is at the west end of San Juan Island. Orca, humpback, gray and minke whales, as well as seals, sea lions, porpoises and otters pass by the day-use park. You can get there by car or bike from Friday Harbor. The park also has a historic lighthouse and lime kiln.
During migration season, volunteers are often there to identify whales. There is also an interpretive center and listening station where visitors can hear the pods passing by.
