After Hours: What's 'chautauqua?' Find out in June

Make new friends and share music, food, crafts and history when New Old Time Chautauqua arrives at several state parks in June.

OLYMPIA — New Old Time Chautauqua (NOTC) will hold gatherings at state parks this summer, beginning June 14.

NOTC says traveling chautauquas were once the most popular form of summer entertainment in America, bringing theater, food and music to small communities. President Theodore Roosevelt called them “the most American thing in America.”

You can learn to juggle, play the ukulele or learn crafts, history and botany. Each chautauqua ends with a grand finale performance with bands, aerialists, comedians, jugglers and more.

Here's the schedule: Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park, June 14-20; Pearrygin Lake State Park, June 22-26; and Birch Bay State Park, June 28-30. Members of the Confederated Tribes of Colville and Lummi Nation will also participate.
