Q. An estimated five billion lives have been saved by the 105 scientists celebrated on the ScienceHeroes.com website. Can you name any of the top heroes or their discoveries?
A. No. 1 and No. 2 are German scientists Fritz Haber (1868-1935) and Carl Bosch (1874-1940), who developed a synthetic fertilizer that saved some 2.7 billion lives by helping the world grow nutritious food, says the website. Without their discovery, the expansion of the world's population from 1.6 billion in 1900 to over 7 billion today would not have been possible.
