Like the International Fountain, “Seattle Jelly Bean” would provide a technology-driven focal point for crowds at Seattle Center. At the center is a tethered, balloon-like structure that would provide protection from the weather, produce its own energy and have a giant screen on its underbelly for gaming and other real-time interactions. The design team says it’s stuff of science fiction but it’s also feasible because the technologies involved — solar, intelligent skin and climate control — have been proven in other applications. Below would be a network of cultural facilities and small open spaces.
You might have missed it if you are not an architect, but Seattle recently hosted an international design competition.
