Design of W Hotel in San Diego nears completion

WHotel
The Seattle-based firm Jensen/Fey Architecture and Planning is completing the design of a new W Hotel in San Diego. Developed by Gatehouse Capital of Dallas for Starwood Hotels, the $25 million facility has 261 units within 20 stories plus three levels of underground parking. The design includes meeting rooms for up to 400 people, a swimming pool and exercise room, and a restaurant and lounge incorporated into a portion of an adjacent 100 year-old structure. The building will be clad in brick on the first two stories; the upper stories will be clad in EIFS.

The site of the new hotel is within walking distance of the Gas Lamp Quarter and the San Diego Convention Center. A July 2000 groundbreaking is scheduled. The hotel will open to the public in April 2002.

Other consultants include design architect 3CI of Dallas, structural engineer DCI Engineers of Bellevue and interior designer Shopworks of Napa. The general contractor is Webcor Builders of San Mateo.
