SEATTLE -- Add the West Seattle Swing Bridge to the list of structures damaged by the Nisqually quake. Seattle Transportation discovered a crack in the bridge's lift cylinder during a routine opening Monday night.
The bridge opens about five times a day for vessels traveling between Elliot Bay and the Lower Duwamish Waterway. It remains open to auto traffic but will be closed to vessel traffic at least through this weekend.
The replacement cylinder weighs about three tons. Installation will involve removing most of the gear house to gain access to the cracked cylinder.
The ten-year-old bridge is the replacement for the West Seattle Bridge rammed by the freighter Chavez in 1978. SeaTran says the repair bill could be as much as $2 million.
