CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN (AP) -- The environmental review for the proposed expansion of Crystal Mountain Ski area is ready for public comment.
Crystal Mountain proposed in 1998 an expansion that would raise the ski resort's capacity from 7,460 skiers a day to 11,020. It also wanted to increase hotel, parking and restaurant space.
The U.S. Forest Service, which owns the 4,350 acres next to Mount Rainier National Park, recommended an alternative plan giving Crystal Mountain most of what it wants.
That alternative would give the ski area capacity for 10,170 skiers a day, 17 lifts and 643.8 acres of ski terrain rather than the 19 lifts and 696.6 acres of terrain that Crystal Mountain wanted.
The 60-day public comment period begins Friday.
