I-90 bridge changes raise questions

SEATTLE -- Proposals to change the configuration of the Interstate 90 bridge across Lake Washington to better accommodate transit and car pools remain contentious.

That was apparent yesterday as Sound Transit's finance committee postponed a decision to give $831,000 to the Washington State Department of Transportation to finish a draft environmental impact statement for the project, which would either create two-way HOV/transit lanes in the center roadway or reconfigure the outer lanes of the floating bridge to do the same.

Sound Transit has budgeted $18.9 million for environmental work and design for the project. About $2.1 million has already been spent.

However, with no source of funds identified for the estimated $35 million to $80 million in construction costs, committee members questioned the wisdom of spending more on the project.

The issue will be revisited at the committee's March 6 meeting.
