SEATTLE -- Sen. Patty Murray secured $500,000 in the Senate's Energy and Water Appropriations bill yesterday to help pay for the first steps in replacing the Elliott Bay seawall.
The funds would pay the federal share of a feasibility study, including planning, preliminary design and environmental impact statements. The study would be conducted by the city of Seattle and the Army Corps of Engineers.
The bill will go to the full Senate Appropriations Committee today, of which Murray is a member.
The 67-year-old seawall has suffered from erosion and earthquake damage, and is vulnerable to collapse. Studies have shown that within the next 10 years there is a 5 percent chance the Alaskan Way Viaduct and seawall will fail during a strong earthquake.
