City Council picks North Link route

SEATTLE -- The City Council unanimously named its preferred route yesterday for Sound Transit's North Link light rail line from downtown to Northgate.

The council called for a route through First Hill before continuing through Capitol Hill on to the University District. After emerging from under the Montlake cut near Husky Stadium, the council's preferred route veers west to a station on Brooklyn Avenue, at 45th Street Northeast in the University District.

From there, the route would travel on 12th Avenue Northeast to an underground station near Northeast 65th Street and then to Northgate.

"By traveling to First Hill we can serve a huge population of residents and people who work at the hospitals and other businesses in that area," said Councilmember Richard Conlin. "Light rail should go where the people are, and not simply be placed where it doesn't interfere with other uses."

The Sound Transit board will choose its preferred route this Thursday.
